Detox Unit fans are going wild for seven new tunes from the elusive producer. Liminal marks his first release since 2019.

After he hinted at a potential album drop last week, it’s an amazing day for Detox Unit fans as his latest project Liminal randomly arrived via Bandcamp last night. Expected to hit other streaming platforms in the days to follow, the mini-album features seven tracks that anyone lucky enough to have caught one of the artist’s rare sets in recent years will surely recognize.

While his performances remain few and far between, Liminal was the soundtrack to many of Detox Unit’s performances in 2022, from festivals like Sonic Bloom and Tipper and Friends to his own curated events at venues like The Brooklyn Mirage and The Eastern. The new mini-album lands after a quiet 2023 thus far for the eclectic bass music producer, but just ahead of his only two festival appearances of the year: Secret Dreams and Imagine Festival.

Detox Unit has a knack for making experimental sounds flow like butter through the most infectious grooves and scratches you’ve ever heard. He does it with precision as the sole artist producing, mixing, and mastering each track he creates. Listeners will fondly recognize the goofy touches he throws in throughout Liminal, like the “you’ve got mail” voice on “Liability” and the electric guitar flair in “Flatline” with its vocal sample proclaiming that “money make the world go ’round.”

“Step Reset” was another crowd favorite in live sets as its steadily chirping intro paints an almost nostalgic picture before living up to its name with a pace-changing dose of breakbeat. One that came as a major surprise on Liminal was the arrival of Detox Unit’s arguably most-famous remix — which many fans assumed would never see an official release — as a bonus seventh track. His take on BIA‘s “Whole Lotta Money” held the entire bass community captive after he first teased it in 2019. His fans have been chasing its addicting beat and car-chirp samples ever since.

Designed to be played with top-notch sound and visual curation, Liminal captures everything about Detox Unit’s signature sonic aesthetic, and his attention to detail shines through the entire project. The long-awaited release definitely poses the question of what his live sets are going to sound like now that these tunes are finally out, as well as what else the elusive musician could still have up his sleeve.
