Fox Stevenson Battles Against His "Enemy Brain" on Latest EP

Fox Stevenson is a one-part electronic music producer and one-part singer/songwriter. All parts assembled he’s a true powerhouse of a talent who’s carved out his own unique sound that melds dance music with pop-punk flair. Versatile as both a DJ and live performer, the live project involves drums, guitar, and vocals to make it a unique experience when he graced the stages of large events such as Rampage Open Air, Tomorrowland, Bass Canyon, and other prestigious events around the world.

Now, Fox Stevenson is starting off strong in 2023 with his nine-track Enemy Brain Entertainment Suite EP on Pilot Records, which straddles the fine line between dance music and pop-rock. Unhindered by the constraints of a particular genre, he pushes against imposed limitations with tracks that are genuine, space-creating oddities of a new generation. In a world that often prefers we choose ‘one or the other’, Fox Stevenson is one of the few willing to balance and create a free-flowing tri-force of dance, pop, and rock in his music.

I’ve been excited about the idea of making stuff at an intersection between my favorite east coast hip hop groups like Tribe Called Quest, and more hooky dance music, maybe throwing a little beck in there, ended up with a song about repetitive behavior.

The title track juxtaposes opposing lyrics of sadness over a happy, uplifting beat.

Fox Stevenson describes his feeling of the “sky falling down” as everything feels ok until the “happiness tax” comes in “Enemy Brain“. This drum and bass tune perfectly set the tone for the remainder of the EP. This track opens us to his deep emotions of stress, doubt, and his uncooperative “enemy brain” that brings him down. By naming his brain an enemy due to the negative emotions it makes him feel, he knows he wants to feel happier.

Continuing this story of hopeless emotion atop a joyous house beat, “For The Taking” tells us that not all his hope is lost, that he can pick himself up metaphorically and opportunity is not gone forever. Continuing this journey, Fox Stevenson shows us in “Get Through” that he holds a steady pace as he gets through his impossible days. This song coincides with the phrase “fake it ’til you make it” as he contrasts the negative emotions portrayed by the lyrics over an uplifting house groove.

With a more somber melody, “Deja Vu” incorporates repetitive lyrics similar to how actual deja vu feels like a repeating moment. This track shares the acceptance of becoming better off without a certain person due to that person’s lack of change. Picking the spirits back up with hits beat, but sung in a flat key with ridiculing lyrics, the next drum and bass track “Victory Over Truth” pours Stevenson’s emotions out. The person who caused his hurt is to be exposed for their bad traits and preferred to win fights by selective hearing and belief versus the value of the truth behind their sly actions.

The catchy melody and lyrics of “Can’t Even Tell” put Fox’s emotions on display yet again with his inability to tell the difference in the fluidity of his emotions. The blur of his mood swings makes it difficult for him to “make peace with his weirdo brain” which no one seems to understand, The somberness his lyrics tell us of his trials and troubles with life, in general, describes him as having the opposite of the Midas touch – everything he touches turns to ruin.

Hitting with another DnB song, “Human In The Evening” describes himself as eroded by the seasons. So as time goes by, he feels he is only “human,” a mortal being known for his excess in emotional displays. Like most with depressive moods, the evening is typically a time of isolation and loneliness after the bustle and business of the daytime. Akin to the previous track, “Still Here” has sad lyrics contrasted atop an uplifting drum and bass beat as well. Similarly, this track emphasizes Fox Stevenson’s glowing presence amidst the sad mood.

Unlike every previous track, the closing track “Bring A Coat” overlays dispiriting lyrics over a slow, sad beat.

The final track of the EP “Bring A Coat” displays the bare, cold feelings Fox Stevenson emits. This display of raw emotion closes the seemingly happy beats of the EP to a final showing of his somber emotions. The lyrics tell listeners that one’s fears aren’t the scariest part of a sad mood, it is the coldness and isolation they bring upon the one feeling them. Mood swings and sadness can cause one to isolate or sever personal connections.

This EP did an outstanding job at sonically defining how a person can seem happy at first glance, but once you truly take the time to listen to them and pay attention to them, their inner emotions could be the opposite, almost isolating. Fox Stevenson produced the tracks like this purposefully to make the listener hear and analyze the message the lyrics sing, so give it a listen!
