Sam Binga and Addison Groove Test Genre Limits on ‘BAGS INC’

Sam Binga and Addison Groove teamed up to create an analog machine record inspired by Chicago jams, Detroit techno, and other US influences.

When Bristol producer Sam Binga launched Pineapple Records in 2019, the goal was simple: create beyond the limits of the UK’s niche bass music scene. He made it clear that collaborating with artists much different than himself was of utmost importance, and that’s where Addison Groove comes in. Known for bringing juke and footwork styles to UK bass music, Addison Groove shares the same no-boundaries mindset and knack for classic analog production.

Taking influence straight from Midwest US dance music, the duo show their Bristol flair on BAGS INC with 12 experimental, club-ready tunes. Using strictly analog equipment, the project was created in just 72 hours, complete with the spontaneity of a true live boxjam session. The average listener could never tell the difference between Binga and Groove’s analog machine beats and a DAW-made dance music tune.

The first two tracks, “FKN SRS” and “TYP SHT,” mirror classic dancefloor hits with catchy, digestible beats before things start to get even more abstract. Distinct vocal chops and electro-funk influence take the stage on “FROM THE BACK,” “HIT THE MOOSE,” and “KILLA FUNK” with acid inspiration throughout. Odes to Detroit techno can be heard in “E-QUESTON” and “RESISTANCE THREAT” before BAGS INC closes on a heavy, atmospheric note with “80 DREAD.”

Regarding the project and its influences, Binga said, “The album definitely owes a debt to tough [pioneering ghetto house label] Dance Mania-style boxjams, but it’s not about imitation. It’s about showing we’ve been listening, then twisting it into something of our own. We could have made a record that ticked the boxes people expect from us, but the best dance music has always come from risk.”

BAGS INC is out everywhere now. Head to Spotify or your preferred platform to take a listen, and to Bandcamp to support the artists directly.
