Co-headliners Bob Moses and Cannons made their mark on The Fillmore Philadelphia with a sensational night of serenades.
Canadian electronic duo Bob Moses rolled through Philadelphia on April 10 as part of their Afterglow Tour. The performance marked their triumphant return to the City of Brotherly Love and ended their eight-year drought of tour dates in the city. Taking place at the The Fillmore Philadelphia, the Afterglow Tour stop enlisted the help of co-headliner Cannons and opening act Oxis to deliver undeniable grooves prior to Bob Moses taking the stage.
Upon arriving at the venue, a representative from the nonprofit HeadCount handed me a whiteboard to weigh in on whom I came to see. As a fan of both Cannons and Bob Moses, I put a tally in both columns. While doing so, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the rest of the audience was pretty evenly split.
I couldn’t help but notice how different the crowd was in comparison to many of the electronic shows I’ve been to at the Fillmore. Skewing older, the room felt relaxed, with plenty of room to groove. Arriving just in time for Cannons to take the stage, I grabbed a drink and staked my claim of a prime viewing spot within the sea of excited fans.
Cannons proved to be a perfect fit for the co-headlining tour.
Promoting their recent album, Everything Glows, Cannons tapped into the record’s moody vibes with their stage design. A flickering streetlight and giant crescent moon hung overhead, immersing us in the album’s sonic world.
They kicked things off with “Loving You,” and the fan-favorite track took me right back to seeing the act during sunset at Electric Forest. Singer Michelle Joy‘s vocal prowess is undeniable. Each word dripping with emotion, Joy’s velvety vocals were the highlight of the 16-song set. The performance, which featured a selection of tracks from four of their studio albums, felt incredibly balanced, hitting longtime fans and newcomers alike.
In a shocking turn of events, Philadelphia ended up being the final performance on the Afterglow Tour for guitarist Paul Davis. Although you would never have known it from his flawless performance, Davis was suffering from bleeding in his brain, leaving the tour the following day to undergo emergency surgery.
Closing out the evening, Bob Moses delivered a set that evoked extreme nostalgia while ushering in a new era for the act.
Taking the stage to a roaring crowd of fans, Bob Moses kicked things off with “Time of Your Life,” the lead single of their latest album, BLINK. The stage came to life as Tom Howie‘s vocals poured out from the speakers. As opposed to Cannon’s stage design that favored intentionality over extravagance, Bob Moses instilled a party atmosphere with LED screens, vibrant visuals, and pulsing lights.
As a longtime fan of the duo who has rarely had the opportunity to catch a live set, I was in awe of how the live experience brought the songs to life in a completely different way. Although clearly electronic-driven tracks, the energy of the show felt akin to a rock concert.
Throughout their commanding performance, Bob Moses took time to highlight recent releases and hit songs like “Inner Light” that triggered massive crowd response. Closing with the emotive “Blink,” the duo wrapped the evening on a high note.
The Afterglow Tour transported me beyond the venue to a place where anxiety melted. Through thoughtful stage designs and meticulously rehearsed setlists, I found myself wrapped in the comfort of my favorite songs. The Afterglow Tour is a can’t-miss event that offers the perfect dancefloor escape.
