“Anett [Tomcsányi] and I are no longer together,” wrote Timmy Trumpet in a statement that went on to explain how he plans to take his music in a different direction.
In December, Timmy Trumpet took about three weeks off from touring after what he called “the toughest year of my life.” The Australian live electronic act has now shared that he and his Hungarian wife, Anett Tomcsányi, have parted ways, and that he foresees the breakup significantly steering the direction of his music.
“Anett and I are no longer together,” reads a social media statement by Timmy Trumpet (real name Timothy Jude Smith). “I’m sharing this because we shared so much of our lives with you. I proposed on a livestream, we stood on stages all around the world… I truly believed that was forever. Life doesn’t always go the way you expect.”
Smith famously popped the question to Tomcsányi in Sydney, on a July 2020 World Club Dome live video feed broadcast. In May 2022, the two wed in Keszthely, two hours from Budapest, with a ceremony held at Festetics Palace.
In his statement, Smith stopped short of disclosing any of his reasoning for the breakup. He instead focused on how it would impact his music going forward.
“Reconnecting with music became my therapy through all of this,” he explained. “And it’s taken me somewhere very different. Everything I release this year, every lyric, every beat, every record, is coming from a real place. It’s honest, it’s personal, and it’s probably not what you expect.”
Smith, who has played the trumpet since age four, won a full-ride scholarship to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and performed with the Australian All-Star Stage Band long before he adopted the Timmy Trumpet alias in the mid-2000s. He’s soared on the backs of wildly successful singles like “Freaks” with Savage and “Mad World” with Gabriel Ponte.
At the end of his statement, Smith addressed Timmy Trumpet fans directly. “If any of this connects with you, then it’s all been worth it,” he wrote. “And if not… I’ll see you at the shows. I love you all more than you know.”
