Bloom, Insomniac’s second nightclub in San Diego, announced that this weekend will be the last time its dancefloor will be open, with an imminent closure on the horizon.
The nightlife industry has been hit hard in recent years as the number of people going out has dwindled and drinking has stopped being en vogue. Major cities around the world have been hit hard by this shift, including San Diego, which has experienced closures or complete transformations of nightclubs in the downtown area. The latest nightclub to break the news of an imminent closure is Bloom.
“If you enjoyed a night out, made a new friend, or danced to your fav DJ at Bloom… let’s celebrate those moments together one final time as Bloom closes its door this Saturday,” the venue posted on Instagram, announcing the closure.
The news that the nightclub was shutting down came as a shock to many in the San Diego community, with past employees, attendees, and artists who performed there sharing their memories on the post.
Prior to being known as Bloom Nightclub, the space at 919 Fourth Ave. was home to other nightlife destinations, including Belo and Bassmnt, which were instrumental in the growth of dance music in San Diego during the 2000s and 2010s. In 2022, it reopened under its latest name under the ownership of Dr. Jack Wasserman, and quickly became a hub for house and techno lovers looking to catch top-tier artists in America’s Finest City.
Insomniac, which had a longstanding relationship with the venue when it was known as Bassmnt, assumed ownership of the venue in 2023 under City In Motion LLC. That led to a remodel of the space and to the doors being reopened for dance music lovers once again.
As part of Insomniac Clubs, Bloom Nightclub expanded beyond its house and techno origins. Brands such as Dreamstate, Bassrush, Lost In Dreams, and Basscon all hosted curated nights at the club, along with other shows like Electrik Seoul. Artists who have taken the stage at the venue over the years have included Infected Mushroom, Darude, Rusko, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Nostalgix, Joshwa, Eats Everything, Cosmic Gate, WHIPPED CREAM, Lil Texas, and Laidback Luke, among countless others.
Insomniac will continue to throw shows in San Diego at its other downtown venue, NOVA, which recently underwent a remodel that removed VIP tables from the main floor, among other upgrades.
The “last dance” for Bloom Nightclub will take place on Saturday, March 28, and is billed as Flashback, a 2010’s EDM Tribute Party. Those who want to spend one last evening out at the venue can attend for free with an RSVP or by reserving a VIP table via the official website.
What will happen with the subterranean venue in the Gaslamp Quarter next remains a mystery. Stay tuned for details.
