HI VOLTAGE stopped by to spin up a guest mix for Paradigm Shift, highlighting his hybrid style that combines hard dance and dubstep.

Southern California is undoubtedly the hotspot for hard dance in America. But that hasn’t stopped places like New York or Arizona from growing their own scenes to spread the harder styles. One of the newer emerging homes for the genre is the bass-heavy state of Florida. Plenty of talent is contributing to the movement, but HI VOLTAGE is arguably leading the charge.

His love for the harder styles emerged from his passion for big room, whose massive synths and melodies created the overwhelming excitement to which he was addicted. Oddly enough, he was never a fan of hardstyle until he discovered Da Tweekaz and Sub Zero Project, which opened his eyes to the similarities between the two genres.

HI VOLTAGE is a big advocate for hard dance now that he understands “the abstract beauty in the uniqueness of different kicks, the emotional power in the melodies, and the energy it can bring to the dancefloor.” He told EDM Identity that he believes “this genre captures energy and emotion unlike any other, even outside of electronic music. I’ve always been most passionate about creation, especially electronic music, which is why I’m pursuing a career in it.”

Over time, the HI VOLTAGE project has blossomed into a focus on hybrid energy. One of the core values of American Hard Dance has always been to create a unique scene separate from Europe. One of those strategies is to mix genres, creating hybrids that retain the essence of hard dance while pushing it to its limits. “My strategy is to use a genre already very common in the local EDM scene, dubstep, and integrate it with hard dance to introduce people to a different, but still very aggressive electronic sound,” he said.

He hopes this hybrid style continues to gain momentum in Florida and beyond. He argued that fans who like dubstep or hard dance are seeking the same thing: “high-energy electronic music,” so he pondered, “Why can’t they like both?” Florida festival Forbidden Kingdom has even booked hard dance acts like Yosuf and Lil Texas, so HI VOLTAGE thinks that “combining hard dance and dubstep is the best way to grow the scene.”

Today, HI VOLTAGE hosts an event series called Heavy Dance in Florida, where he brings in heavy hitters alongside rising talent. The series has shown greatness with banging events featuring KAMI and Dual Damage, with Dionysus stopping by this month.

To prepare for the madness that lies ahead, Heavy Dance founder HI VOLTAGE stopped by to spin up a massive mix for our hard dance mix series, Paradigm Shift! Prepare for nearly an hour of hybrid energy with engaging mashups, unreleased treats, and high-voltage (pun intended) originals!

Hard dance is the best way to evoke emotion in someone, so long as they understand it. The goal of HI VOLTAGE, and my event series Heavy Dance, is to bring the most energetic music to people, and inspire the excitement in them as it does in me.
