The iconic Kaskade delivers his first studio album in a decade with undux. Diving deep into unexplored sonic stylings, the legendary producer is better than ever.
Ryan Raddon, better known as Kaskade, takes fans on a deeper, more emotive journey with his most recent full-length album, undux, out on Monstercat and his own label, Arkade.
The storied producer has been responsible for some of the most iconic records in dance music. He’s put out groundbreaking albums like Fire and Ice — home to legendary hits such as “Eyes,” and “Turn it Down” — while 2013’s Atmosphere delivered anthemic bangers “Last Chance” and “Disarm You.” Automatic, released a decade ago at the crest of the mainstream EDM wave, set the tone for global dance music culture with unforgettable tracks like “No One Knows Who We Are,” and “Us.”
But Kaskade hasn’t vanished from the spotlight. He’s remained at the pinnacle of EDM with his powerhouse Kx5 side project alongside Deadmau5, cemented an extended residency at Zouk Las Vegas, and even released multiple Christmas-themed albums over the past ten years. Kaskade has truly become synonymous with dance music, and undux continues to write his untouchable career into the stuff of legends.
undux takes a closer look at the darker side of being human. Kaskade’s most recent productions explore heavier themes of love, heartbreak, and learning to move on — experiences that all point us to the dancefloor for solace.
Despite these more somber elements, Kaskade’s ability to continually lift spirits to the highest highs through music remains front and center on undux. When life tends to push us to our limits, fans of all kinds can still find the light in the darkness, which exists in spades within Kaskade’s most recent full-length album.
Earlier this year, Kaskade treated fans to four singles from undux.
“DNCR” delivers an uplifting yet melancholic vibe. Danceable grooves highlighted by well-polished keys, a rolling low end, and sharp snares welcome listeners with open arms. Kaskade’s signature dynamic production style shines bright on “imprint,” a track reminiscent of his Fire and Ice era. This electronic ballad delivers powerful lyricism from Courtney Storm, slowing the tempo while tugging on the heartstrings in all the right ways.
Festival-ready vibes are met with heartbreaking vocals on “i cant make you love me,” as driving kicks, perfectly placed synth pads, and soothing strings combine for a marvelously melodic drop that commands both hands in the air. And while that track grapples with the pain of letting go, “started over” featuring Cayson Renshaw captures the strength it takes to begin again. Ethereal breakbeats ebb and flow, deeply intertwined with the cinematic strings, potent lyricism, and evocative bass lines that only Kaskade can deliver.
While these lead singles set the tone for undux, the album opens with “heart worth breaking” featuring Cop Kid, a more unconventional take on Kaskade’s sound. It’s heavily laden with synths that sound closer to an electric guitar than a keyboard, while gritty snares and razor-sharp vocal harmonies provide an eye-opening perspective into the world of undux.
The club vibes persist on “where’s my wedge” alongside Lissa Lohner‘s silky smooth vocals. Progressive synths reminiscent of the electro house era carry the groove as the tempo climbs to its highest yet.
At its core, undux commands a more introspective energy than the sensory overload of clubs or festivals.
“touch,” featuring MKLA, “if only” featuring PYFER, and “obvious” are all tailor-made for the 3am kick-backs rather than the peak-time dancefloor. Kaskade has mastered the art of tapping into an emotional plane of unanswered questions and what-ifs that all too often come creeping back in, allowing them to fade away.
He then flexes his remix muscle on “fools,” heavily sampling the all-American classic “Chain of Fools” by the mighty Aretha Franklin. This funkified, bass-laden banger lifts spirits high while staying true to the album’s underlying themes.
“like that” featuring Winn Winn delivers a standout favorite, as an industrial drum and bass vibe makes its first appearance in the album. While this isn’t Kaskade’s typical style, his ability to push his signature sound outside the box yet again highlights why he stands in a league of his own.
undux has an uncanny ability to navigate a myriad of moods with ease, exemplified when the somber vibes return on “unspoken” featuring Belle Jewel. Gorgeous piano keys permeate while Jewel’s vocals carry the track over a perfectly polished bass line and just the right amount of percussive flavor. Meanwhile, “deeper” featuring Mia Grace explores the most complex part of human connections: when they fall apart.
We enter the curtain call of undux with the cinematic and utterly spine-tingling “can i surrender.”
This slow-burning track rife with masterful synth pads, airy vocals, and scintillating strings sees Kaskade lower the tempo and elevate the frequency to close out his most boundary-pushing album to date. undux captivates fans from the very beginning, taking listeners to a place that forces us all to confront the elements of life that can often be the most challenging. And it does so through the power of music.
