MPH’s latest album, Substance, sees the UKG artist open the doors to a story that features UK rapper EV, Chris Lorenzo, Habstrakt, and more.
DJ and producer MPH has been on a mission to bring UK Garage, bassline, and bass house to the masses over the past few years, and he’s taking no prisoners along the way. Dig into his discography, and in addition to his extensive list of self-releases, you’ll find fantastic tracks that have graced labels such as Night Bass, bitbird, Crucast, HARD Recs, and Black Book Records. MPH’s albums,132.00FM and Refraction, have also featured some rich soundscapes for fans to feast their ears on, and he’s served up another stunner with the release of Substance.
UK rapper EV plays a crucial role as the effective narrator on Substance. “Euphoria” and “Against The Clock” open the ride with his lyrical prowess on full display. The first is backed by a moody atmosphere, while the second sees MPH add some of his signature bouncy energy into the mix. A third appearance arrives on the Chris Lorenzo collaboration, “Run,” which incorporates elements ranging from distortion to infectious grooves into the mix. The title track that finishes the ride also brings EV in for good measure, closing out everything in style with a proper bookend to the Substance story.
“[EV and I] met up a few months back and tied the whole project together in one session, making sure every track blends into the next and the storyline stays consistent throughout,” MPH said on Instagram. “I hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting this project together – if you have the time please listen to it from start to finish.”
The start-to-finish mentality is reflected in the album’s structure, as the other tracks throughout keep Substance moving forward. Early tunes like “Pre’s” and “Bouncin’” with Sparkz help create a proper vibe while retaining their dancefloor-ready nature. Others, like “Until The Morning,” “Untouchable” with Habstrakt, “Vulnerable” with Cameron Hayes, and “LA NYC” ooze with so many samples and bouncy elements that you can’t help but yearn for another listen after giving them a spin.
Artists take a leap of faith when breaking industry norms to release something more conceptual, and this album from MPH has surely stuck its landing. He continues to drop off heater after heater, making the future brighter than ever for this UK artist.
