tesh Twists Sound Into Story on Debut EP, ‘CYCLES + REPETITIONS’

tesh releases his debut EP, CYCLES + REPETITIONS, and it’s a beautifully crafted story told by the sounds of house, techno, and reimagined UKG.

The argument could be made that we’re living in the best era of electronic music. Okay, maybe not in some areas, but when it comes to production, these kids are really breaking boundaries. It’s rejuvenating. Refreshing.

One of these artists is tesh, a Los Angeles-based multi-genre producer. This budding artist’s debut EP, CYCLES + REPETITIONS, is out now via bitbird, and it’s both a history lesson and a beautifully executed sonic experience.

The project is a blend of many genres—ranging from UKG garage to house to techno—while reviving the lost art of storytelling. Conceptually, CYCLES + REPETITIONS echoes the visions of artists like Drexciya and Daft Punk, who created stories from their sound. The sonic journey tells the familiar story of how we learn from the cycles we repeat to create something better personally and societally each time. The narrative lives within the fictional dystopian metropolis, Oroboro, inspired by London, New York City, and Los Angeles.

The EP’s leading track, “APOLOGIES,” is UKG/2-step but reimagined through the eyes of tesh. The club heater highlights the underground producer’s admiration for and knowledge of rave culture. The track blends early-day vocal elements with the artist’s unique, modern production style.

“ALL MY LIFE” serves as the project’s mantra, reminding us of the ups and downs in our relationship with ambition. The EP ends with “INDIGO,” a certified heater. The track feels like freedom at 6am on the dance floor. It feels like happiness when we’re with our people, completely disconnected from the outside world.

CYCLES + REPETITIONS magically weaves together the art of sound production and the art of narrative, leading to an all-encompassing listening experience. The EP is an exciting debut for the growing producer. If this is just the beginning for tesh, then it’s safe to say the next cycle will be even better.
