Dancing Through Emotions: Qrion’s ‘We Are Always Under The Same Sky’

in Album Review

Qrion’s sophomore album, We Are Always Under The Same Sky, takes listeners on a journey of self-discovery, emotional healing, and connection.

Japanese producer Qrion (real name Momiji Tsukada), has earned a reputation as one of electronic music’s most heartfelt storytellers. From her origins in snowy Sapporo, Japan to her rise as a global artist, Qrion’s music has consistently reflected her personal journey. Known for her melancholic yet uplifting soundscapes, she captures the complexity of human emotion with a style that is both intimate and universal.

Over the years, Qrion has graced labels like This Never Happened and Anjunadeep with her craft. Now, she is back on the latter, an Anjunabeats sister imprint, to deliver her sophomore album, We Are Always Under The Same Sky. This inquisitive LP builds on her legacy, offering a deeply personal exploration of resilience, self-love, and connection through ten evocative tracks.

While her 2021 debut, I Hope It Lasts Forever, looked back at the past, We Are Always Under The Same Sky feels like a step forward. It’s an album that finds solace in the present, giving a gentle reminder that it’s less about where we are and more about the love and connection nurtured along the way.

This album is a deeply personal reflection of my journey through some of the most challenging times in my life, including loneliness, addiction, and the struggle to rebuild myself during the pandemic. It represents my emotional and mental transformation from hitting rock bottom to finding self-love and forgiveness.

Qrion

Qrion’s production style, both deeply melancholic and dancefloor-minded, remains central to this album. It’s the exploratory rhythms of “Hush My Heart” featuring Josie Man. It’s the soul-sampling grooves that pay homage to her father’s freeform jazz roots. Each track evokes memories and emotions that resonate with me deeply.

The introductory track, “Lean Into Light” featuring pinkpirate, feels like stepping into warm sunlight after a long rainstorm. It offers a delicate balance of melancholy and hope. The melodies of tracks like “Miyanosawa” and “Keep On Moving Up” bounce and flicker like beams of light through a canopy of trees, while their warm piano chords flow like a gentle stream beneath it.

We Are Always Under The Same Sky is not just an album; it’s an emotional odyssey. Qrion’s ability to blend her personal experiences with universal themes of love, loss, and resilience creates an unparalleled listening experience. Whether you’re walking in the rain, driving through mountains, or reflecting on your own memories, this album is a soundtrack for life’s most introspective moments.

Jackie Peppler

Based in Southern California, Jackie grew up with a profound love for all things dance music. She found a home in the festival scene and realized her dream of pursuing a career in music and event production at just fourteen. Over the years, she has worked in various facets of the industry, including writing for various media outlets, managing social media at Audio San Francisco, organizing local events with Burning Man, and working as artist transportation at festivals like Life Is Beautiful. She fell in love with Anjunadeep during her time at Audio, with progressive and deep house encapsulating her heart. However, her music taste spans far and wide, so you never know which side of the festival grounds you may find her at. When she's not bopping around a festival, you'll likely find her behind the decks as DJ JAKLŸN.
