Crosstown Rebels label head Damian Lazarus dropped off a surprise album, Magickal, just days before one of his biggest parties of the year, Day Zero.

After nearly two years of work, Damian Lazarus has returned with his fifth album, Magickal, and this project has been nothing short of transformative for the eclectic dance music maestro. Known for his boundary-pushing sets and legendary events in places like Miami and Tulum, Lazarus has been shaping dance floors for over three decades. Out now on his label Crosstown Rebels, Magickal continues that journey by blending diverse influences and sounds that showcase him as a true curator.

The eight-track album starts with “Searchin’,” featuring Jem Cooke, setting the stage with its captivating vocal work and hooky bassline right out of the gate. This opening track holds a magnetic energy that immediately draws listeners in. “So Low,” featuring Zoe Kypri, follows suit and adopts a slightly darker tone thanks to its atmospheric production and commanding vocals. The momentum rolls on with “Why Don’t U,” which showcases Lazarus’ knack for weaving different rhythms into one.

Further into the album, notable collaborations like “Failing Down,” featuring TEED and A-Trak, stand out. From the soulful undercurrents of “Sunrise Generation” to the flamenco-infused flair of “La Hija De Juan Simón,” Lazarus proves throughout the album that he’s more than willing to experiment. This approach reflects his extensive background in A&R and highlights his commitment to forging connections between global musical influences.

Ultimately, Magickal is a celebration of Lazarus’ enduring passion for music and the dancefloor. It captures the spirit of unity, the thrill of sonic exploration, and the undeniable magic that unfolds when people come together in rhythm. Coupled with Lazarus’ renewed clarity in sobriety, this record represents a turning point in his personal and creative life. Whether you’re a longtime admirer or just discovering his work, Magickal offers an uplifting journey that will leave you craving the glow of sunrise on a dance floor somewhere far away.

Beyond the record itself, Magickal arrives just in time for Day Zero, Lazarus’ renowned annual festival in Tulum, which will kick off the global Magickal World Tour in 2025. This one-day event, set against the lush backdrop of the Mexican jungle, has become a hallmark event that merges music, art, and nature. The synergy between the festival’s ethos and the album’s transcendent themes shows how important communal experiences are to Lazarus’ artistic vision.
