Kasablanca Drops Off Side A of Debut Album, ‘Higher Resolution’

Kasablanca takes the next leap in their meteoric rise in the scene with the release of Higher Resolution (Side A), the first part of their debut album.

Kasablanca emerged as one of the most mysterious acts in the scene in 2020. Releases on This Never Happened and mau5trap helped trumpet their arrival, yet it was Anjunabeats where the duo truly began to blossom. Yet in the midst of their rise, Kasablanca hit a slight snag as the duo’s frontman, Micky, was diagnosed with cancer. That might’ve slowed their rise slightly, but it didn’t stop the soundscapes that feature powerful emotions and digital atmospheres from surfacing.

Once Micky announced he was in remission, it was time to celebrate. First, more shows began to take place, but now, they’ve released their debut album, Higher Resolution (Side A). Out now via Anjunabeats, this collection of tunes from Kasblanca is remarkably deep while retaining their dance-forward nature, and hearing these soundscapes in a live setting only makes the experience sweeter.

“Remission” with Lane 8 helped kick off the Higher Resolution celebration when it was released earlier this summer, and the single stands tall as one of the best on the collection. Follow-up singles “Terminal Feeling” and “Daydream” with anamē showed the duo’s dynamic nature. At the same time, “Breathe” saw Kasblanca take the iconic hit from The Prodigy and breathe new life into it. These vibrant tracks are all solid representations of what type of energy this duo exudes, but there’s even more to explore on Side A.

The album’s title track features a blend of synths, modulated vocals, and other delightful elements that make you feel like you’re dancing with robots in a digital dream. In the middle is “side effects,” which offers a chilled-out atmosphere perfect for late-night drives through the city as it seamlessly transitions into the even more robotic “Clarity.” The banging beat on this one layers electro elements and rising chords while the spoken-word vocal keeps you chugging along as if you’re on a factory’s conveyor belt.

The final two tunes, “Dawn” and “Kosmos,” show off two distinct sides of Kasablanca. The former is a stunning ride with emotion-fueled vocals and melodic moments that are sure to give you that floating feeling. The latter opens with more modulated vocals before a breakbeat kicks in, leading to a powerful, dancefloor-ready groove that will leave you wondering which dimension you’ve been transported to. “inner_mission” then arrives, acting as a companion to the intro, “innit,” while preparing fans for what’s to come on Side B, so keep your ears tuned for that.
