MPH returns to Night Bass in style with his latest album, Refraction, featuring 15 tracks that span genres from bass house and UK Garage to 140 and drum and bass.
UK-based DJ and producer MPH has left a lasting impression on the scene with some memorable releases that have pushed sonic boundaries. Sign-offs from notable labels and tastemakers in the scene have helped bolster his rise through the ranks, and he’s only continued to show off his mastery of storytelling through music along the way. Now, he’s returned to Night Bass with his sophomore album, Refraction, which offers 15 fresh tracks rooted in his love for everything from bass house to jungle and more.
Refraction is out now across all platforms and features a hearty helping of 15 tunes that will sweep you off your feet and take you straight to the dancefloor. At its core is the storytelling component, with the UK-based artist carefully curating vibes based on different places he’s visited. “Throughout you’ll see a variety of environments which I’ve captured on my phone and carefully picked to match with the energy of each track,” MPH shared about the album. “For some of the more gritty bass tracks it’s quite dark and urban, meanwhile the softer UKG side of the album ties to rural landscapes/sunsets.”
The atmospheric intro track “Pushing” leads the way on Refraction, offering a moment of sonic bliss before diving straight into proper dancefloor grooves on “Cadence,” “Just Like,” and “Brainwashing.” The breaks on “North LDN” come in strong and pair perfectly with Subten’s sick lyrical flow to make this one of the best tracks on the album. More breaks surface later in the album on “Crowd Rolling,” which delivers a touch of drum and bass to add to the dynamic nature of this story from MPH.
Previously released singles “Funk Master” and “Lights On” stick out as special. The former is a solid 140 tune that lovers of deeper bass should flock to, while MPH teams up with AC Slater and Eloise Keeble for a bouncy bass house ride on the latter. Other standouts include “My Mind,” “Shoot To Kill,” and “Over This,” all of which you’ll find yourself shuffling to in no time at all.
