OLAN Takes Listeners on a Trip to ‘Floating Worlds’

Innovative indie electronic artist OLAN delivers her most authentic work yet on her sophomore album, Floating Worlds, which is out now via .WAVCAVE.

Authenticity is key for artists to stand out in the current, oversaturated state of the scene, and that’s what OLAN has done with her career from the start. After finding an early home on Anjunadeep, where she released her debut album, Contra, she switched gears and opted to release independently. OLAN’s creative freedom allowed her to pursue her artistic vision for the project. Since then, she’s fostered a relationship with ODESZA, who she later joined on The Last Goodbye tour, along with other artists like QRTR, whose label is home to her sophomore album, Floating Worlds.

OLAN channeled the ups and downs she’s experienced in her career over the past few years to bring Floating Worlds to life. Drawing from the concept of liminal space, it’s an open, honest look into the transformative process she underwent to become the artist she is today.

“This album as a whole has been a way for me to confront any grief or disappointment I experienced in the last four years,” OLAN shared. “Floating Worlds literally refers to how unreliable and flaky our existence can be. As the album took shape, I started to realize I wasn’t alone in what I was feeling. That didn’t justify anything, but not feeling alone meant there’s a way to cope.”

Floating Worlds features 11 house tracks, ranging from chilled-out soundscapes to others that pick up the pace with a touch of energy. Its organic percussion, gorgeous vocal layers, and pensive moments leave you feeling as if you’re, in fact, floating. Singles that arrived prior to the release show off these elements, with “Faster Than Sound” and “If You Need Me” sparking dancefloor, head-bopping vibes while OLAN flexed her songwriting ability on “Warm To The Touch.”

“Lyrically, it’s just about being so in tune with someone’s company that it makes you feel immersed in the present moment without wanting to change it,” OLAN said about “Warm To The Touch.” “This song is my appreciation of the little joys I get to experience in love when the world is…cruel.”

Other singles on Floating Worlds, like “Salt,” “Condition,” “Taken Apart,” and “On Your Own,” fully display the artistic growth that OLAN has experienced over the past few years. These dynamic tunes feature everything from serene synths and deep, groovy basslines to piano keys and emotional lyrics, all of which add to the deeply personal atmosphere.
