Best known for his stunning, soulful cuts, Trail reminds listeners he can flip the switch for his latest offering on 1985 Music, Halation.

French DJ and producer Trail is one of the many artists making waves in the scene. He’s been honing his craft for nearly a decade, garnering releases on labels, including Sofa Sound, Impact Music, Flexout Audio, and 1985 Music, which all showcase a next-level drum and bass style. Last summer, Trail finally released his first solo EP on 1985 Music, Resident, after appearing in plenty of compilations and collaborations in the past. Now, almost exactly a year later, he’s released his second solo project on the label, Halation.

The EP’s namesake refers to “the spreading of light beyond its proper boundaries to form a fog around the edges of a bright image.” This halo-like effect is seen in photography and cinematography, and is often considered a flaw but can also be used artistically to create a specific aesthetic. With that in mind, Trail brings two tracks, each of both heavy and soulful drum and bass, to make for a balanced four-track EP, and the tunes couldn’t be more perfect for summer.

The opening track, “Halation,” is a liquid DNB lover’s dream, a style fans know and love from the French musician all too well. Euphoric details float within the fast-paced beat for a tune that makes you want to dance. For fans of his emotional liquid style, he even teamed up with label favorites Visages again following their soulful hit from last summer, “Misty Blue.” While that tune is hard to beat, they’ve created yet another feel-good masterpiece this summer with “Comet.”

While the two emotion-heavy beats shine bright, Trail shows off his take on the darker side of the drum and bass spectrum on “Wraith” with Monty and Halation‘s final track, “Blackening.” Both beats offer eerie sonics and a high-energy fit for any small, dimly lit dancefloor.

Halation is out everywhere now, so run to Spotify or your preferred platform to hear some of the best DNB in the game.
