The ‘Journey Through Trance’ Compilation Series Reaches Belgian Territory

Belgium is the latest country that Arjan Rietveld has explored with the release of the latest compilation in the Journey Through Trance series.

The sound of trance is unmistakable. From airy soundscapes that leave you feeling as if you’re floating to powerful, driving tunes that carry you deeper into the night on the dancefloor, there’s so much to explore within the genre. While the dynamic style has infected the globe and influenced countless artists, if you look back in time you’ll find the bustling clubs of Europe helping lead the charge. And that history is exactly what Arjan Rietveld explored in his book, Hypnotised: A Journey Through Trance Music 1990 – 2005.

The book acts as an encyclopedic companion to the mix series that bears most of its name, and after Rietveld dug through the histories of Germany, The Netherlands, and England, it was time for Belgium to shine. While the dates on the fourth compilation in the series might imply a chronological representation, a label-focused approach is what’s delivered instead as Rietveld digs into the imprints that helped shape the trance scene during its formative era.

The first disc centers on the sounds of R&S, Dance Opera, and Bonzai, with featured tracks from artists such as Digital Excitation, CJ Bolland, Space Module, Airscape, and Blue Alphabet. Labels Anaconda, S5 Red Active, and XTC take control on the second disc, as the exploration continues with tunes from DJ Wout, Osaka 2, M.I.K.E., Extreme Traxx, and Perfect Sphere, among others.

The third disc carries everyone to the finish line with tracks from the Yeti, Camouflage, and Green Martian imprints as a focus. You’ll find yourself swept away by the soundscapes from Filterheadz, The Snapper, Sinesweeper, Jericho, Cosmo Kid, and more.

Listen to Hypnotised: A Journey Through Belgian Trance Music 1992-2003 on Spotify or your preferred platform. CD and Vinyl copies are also available via Black Hole Recordings’ official store.
