Spag Ruckus swung by to chat about the influences behind his debut album and dropped off a mix that showcases where he’s heading sonically.
Thomas Desbouvrie has been on quite the eclectic ride over the past few decades. Not only has he explored the bass music realm as a founding member of Dirtyphonics, but he has also touched other forms of art, including painting, graphic design, and writing poetry. The Frenchman embraced a new alias along the way, Matheo de Bruvisso, but after taking some time off from music he’s roared back into the limelight as Spag Ruckus.
The Spag Ruckus project began in 2022 and allowed for renewed experimentation in electronic music. As his creative mind birthed new soundscapes into the world, an album called his name, culminating with this year’s release of Ghosts Of Perversion. After the release, we caught up with Spag Ruckus to dig a bit deeper and explore the new world he’s creating.
Before we dove into his recent project, some closure for the Dirtyphonics era was due. Spag Ruckus stated that he left the group because he had started a family and wanted to be there for his kids when they were in their young, formative years. “Now that [my children] need me less, I have more time to seriously get back to composing,” he shared. “But in reality, I never stopped; I just had other priorities. It also took me time to rebuild a new studio from A to Z and find an artistic line that suited me.”
That new studio and artistic path have come to fruition with the Spag Ruckus project, which, according to him, has a direction that’s “deliberately quite vague and indefinite.” “As I like music in general more than a particular genre, I decided to do what I wanted when I wanted! I have composed techno, film music, classics, Glitch Hop, and sometimes very experimental things, too,” he shared. “My music evolves with me; it changes all the time, and I have no idea what it will be like in ten years. There are still two different goals that are emerging. I increasingly want to make movie scores and produce music for singers.”
But while Spag Ruckus has continued to explore different sonic realms, bass music has still sat in the front of his mind. “Drum and bass and deep dubstep remain inexhaustible sources of inspiration for me,” he said. “I like the textures and the energy that emerge from these styles but I don’t particularly want to stay faithful to them. I would tend to move further and further away from it.”
The name of his album, Ghosts Of Perversion, was the next topic of conversation as Spag Ruckus detailed his experiences in recent years. He’s embarked on psychological work and faced the darkest parts of himself along the way, while also finding the true selves of certain people in his life as their masks were taken off. “It allowed me to face the perversity that sometimes hides in us and becoming aware of it allowed me to move away from it,” he said. “I see them as ghosts who would always be present but who no longer have any influence over me.”
Those hoping to catch Spag Ruckus at an upcoming show will need to wait just a little bit longer, as performances aren’t in the works at the moment. That said, he does have plans for them in the future after he finds a format that suits him best. “What is certain is that I don’t want to go on the road alone; it will most likely be live rather than a DJ set,” he shared. “I’d love to bring my modular set up on stage and be able to improvise something from scratch.” And to give everyone a taste, he dropped off a mix for everyone to feast their ears on.
