Looking for deep, eerie bass soundscapes that will leave your skin crawling? LYQD has you covered with his latest release, Breath Control.

Over the past few years, the deeper side of the dubstep scene has taken hold of an increasing number of bass music lovers. While top-level artists have clamored to make waves in this space, it’s those rising through the ranks, like LYQD, who are really fostering the future. This Los Angeles-based DJ and producer has carved out space for himself as the co-founder of Vibey Desert and a resident at shows hosted by beloved promoter B-Side LA. He carried that into his set in San Diego in February, opening for none other than Truth during the Deep, Dark & Dangerous showcase by Daisy Chain.

But if you want to see exactly how LYQD advocates for Soundsytem culture, his releases tell the tale. Although his discography is short, releases like the Sub Conscious EP and tracks such as “Lessons From A Peasant” with Jordan Hill and “Trapped” fully display the depth of his style. This week, LYQD built on that discography with the release of his latest body of work, Breath Control.

Breath Control is a four-track collection of tunes that will leave you hypnotized from the jump. The slow, methodical start to the release begins with “Wussup,” which sets the tone for what’s to come. The pitched vocal on this one is layered over an eerie, unsettling atmosphere, almost as if you’ve stepped into a place you shouldn’t be with someone beckoning you to release them from their shackles.

“Wussup” fades out, and the title track fades in, its slow drum progression acting as a call to march forward into the depths of the unknown. As it echoes in closer, you can feel your breath picking up the pace as mechanical elements swirl in your head. A moment to breathe arrives with the sound of running water before LYQD’s producer tag introduces the second half of the track, which is pure bass goodness that will leave your jaw on the floor as it rumbles forward.

Once you’ve embraced the oddly comforting eeriness, “Chavin Tunnels” takes you even deeper into the abyss. Slow steps into this subterranean space are a must as you don’t know what’s around the corner, only hearing the repeated vocal echo in your mind. Once you turn that corner, you’re slapped straight in the face with another round of oscillating wubs reverberating through your body like you just hit a nitrous tank.

Will you ever escape the madness, or are you destined to exist in it forever? “Na” answers that question in a way. While still retaining the hypnotic elements that the other tracks carried with them, this one feels a bit lighter, at first, before your set on a ride that features vocal stabs and deep bass growls. Close your eyes, and you’ll quickly imagine yourself running away with your heart racing as the breakbeat kicks in during the second half, but it’s up to you to decide if you’ve fully gotten away from LYQD’s grip.
