Poni Returns to the Spotlight with Debut EP, ‘POWERLESS’

Canadian bass artist Poni returns to the spotlight in 2024 with the release of her debut EP on Sounds of Mayhem, POWERLESS.

Poni is a one-of-a-kind bass music artist who first rose to prominence in electronic dance music in 2020. Known for her dark and distorted bass-centered production style, she quickly won listeners over with unique drum and bass mashups and streamed sets amidst the unfolding pandemic. That same year, she made her label debut with Monstercat with a remix of Tokyo Machine‘s “PLAY,” capturing more fans across the scene. Since then, Poni has continued to grow, gaining support from labels including Space Yacht and Sable Valley.

Easily one of the most open and honest artists online, Poni recently disclosed the reality that she had faced last year regarding her visa. In 2023, she was forced to return home to Canada while her visa was reapproved, restricting her career growth for the time being and also being a time of loss for her. Now, Poni has announced her visa approval and consequent return to the US, just in time to start 2024 off with the release of her debut EP, POWERLESS, on PhaseOne‘s Sounds of Mayhem imprint.

Originally, I hadn’t imagined these songs fitting together in a body of work until I realized that they all had a common theme… Powerless, Misery, Parasite, Suffering… All very desolate titles. While working on these songs over the last few years, through the hardest times of my life, I was pouring my feelings of depression, anger, pain, anxiety, frustration, and stress without even realizing it into writing them, and I think it shows.

Poni

POWERLESS serves as a musical translation of the hardships and loss that Poni has endured in her personal life over the last few years. With just four tracks, the EP might seem small, but just like Poni, it packs quite the punch. The EP starts with the titular track, featuring Qoiet on vocals for a spectacular rocktronic song filled with anger, energy, and bass.

Next, Poni teams up with WISNER for beautiful, melancholic vocals into a heavy bass-fueled drop on “SUFFERING“. The four-track ride wraps up with “MISERY” and “PARASITE“, two tracks that unleash dark energy through elements of dubstep and drum and bass. If this EP is any sign of what’s to come, we’re confident in stating that 2024 will be the year of Poni.

Experience life through Poni’s eyes with the POWERLESS EP on your preferred platform, and be sure to follow Poni on socials to find out where you can see her live in the US!
