GVN shows off where he’s heading in the scene with the release of his delightful two-tracker on Anjunabeats, Thinking About You / Believer.
Valentine’s Day. A day for community, a day for partnership, a day for love. For many in the dance music scene, that love is for the music that brings people together. One of those people is Gavin Brown, otherwise known as GVN. This Irish producer made a name for himself on Anjunabeats with a fresh infusion of progressive trance and breakbeat from 2020 onwards after the release of “I Don’t” on the first Anjunabeats Rising compilation. Since then, he’s gained support from the likes of Marcus Schössow while delivering releases like “Take Me There” with gardenstate, Lucid Desire / Stay, and Save Me / Alone.
GVN’s latest offering, the emphatic Thinking About You / Believer, which arrived on Valentine’s Day, comes after a two-year-long hiatus between releases, but that is no indication of him slowing down. Dedicated to those who gave the Irish producer the opportunity, wisdom, and guidance to get where he is now, the two-tracker acts as a snapshot into the scene’s future, not the larger-than-life producer but the everyman.
“Thinking About You” opens the EP with an energetic slice of progressive trance that befits an Anjunabeats A-side. It’s catchy, it’s an earworm, and it has that UK sound that makes it stay on rotation because of its simplicity. The ”NRG Mix,” however, sees the Irish producer go deeper into that UK sound, as it’s just what it enunciates: ENERGY. This version features a high tempo that’s better suited for the UK nightclubs GVN got his start in.
On the other hand, “Believer” is very much in the breakbeat style that made GVN gain renown with classic UK 2-step elements in the intro before showcasing a lot of what he has picked up from Marcus Schössow in its composition. That said, his personal touch is very prevalent as well, blending both mentor and mentee for an analog head bobber worthy of GVN’s return.
It’s clear that this release is not overly polished and refined, but a very open love letter to the genres that made GVN burn the midnight oil learning to produce years ago. And when we asked him about Thinking About You / Believer, he replied like any bedroom producer turned label mainstay would respond, with humility that someone in love with the scene would.
