“Infraliminal” sees Rezz and deadmau5 deliver a fresh take on the latter artist’s 2012 track, “Superliminal.”
deadmau5 released his sixth studio album, > album title goes here <, more than 11 years ago. On it appeared “Superliminal,” a track in which the Canadian producer gave his signature spin on the bass wobbles popular in dubstep at the time. Now, with the help of midtempo forerunner Rezz, he’s offered up a REZZMAU5 2023 rendition of the single titled “Infraliminal.”
After a nearly identical intro, “Infraliminal” lowers the tempo and turns up the bass. The source material’s undulating sonics are reinforced by a truly cinematic low end meant to be felt in your chest as your hairs stand on end. Following a serene, atmospheric breakdown and a vaguely trap-inspired buildup, the pace picks up once more. This track will prove handy for DJs wanting to easily transition between bass house, dubstep, or midtempo.
Rezz (real name Isabelle Rezazadeh) and deadmau5 (real name Joel Zimmerman) go way back. As Rezazadeh was starting to make waves in the music world, the already world-famous Zimmerman released her 2015 single “Serenity” on his mau5trap record label. The following year, he offered his platform once again for the release of her debut EP, The Silence is Deafening.
It wasn’t until six years later that the two collaborated in earnest. In 2021, they released the REZZMAU5 single “Hypnocurrency,” which paired Zimmerman’s effervescent sonics with Rezazadeh’s ominous, marching midtempo percussion. “Infraliminal,” their second joint effort, likely won’t be their last. “I foresee us making many more tunes,” Rezazadeh wrote in a social media post on Friday, the day of the release.
