Anderholm Says He’d ‘Rather Be Lost’ on Newest EP

in Album Review

Rather Be Lost is Anderholm’s latest body of work and sees the Ukrainian artist flex his creative might with emotion-fueled dance tunes.

This Never Happened has played host to many fantastic artists since its inception, and Anderholm is one of those artists who continues to sweep listeners away into a different state of mind. From early releases like 2018’s Bluebird / Duchess to this year’s Dragging Me Down, this Ukrainian artist has been a persistent force to be reckoned with on the Lane 8-led imprint. After Anderholm collaborated with the label boss on “Roll Call,” which dropped in August, he’s returned with five fresh tunes on Rather Be Lost that showcase why so many fans have fallen in love with his sound.

Rather Be Lost isn’t just a collection of new tracks from the mind of Anderholm; they’re a deeper, intimate look into the emotions this Ukrainian artist has experienced lately. Bucking the trend of softer melodic house offerings, a darker, dance-fueled ambiance arrives on this EP, and its title track puts that on display from the jump. The synths found on “Rather Be Lost” will stir up a sense of nostalgia while powering forward with gorgeous layers of elements that include the stunning vocals from Sirolf that will pang deep in your soul.

Anderholm was clearly just getting started as he looked to Phoebe Tsen to lend her voice to the second track, “Not Over.” This one leans more into the indie dance side of the spectrum with its stripped-back intro featuring electric guitar and prominent vocals before it kicks into gear with its hypnotic melody that swells with energy into a progressive-laden behemoth as the seconds tick away. “Silhouettes” provides a similar soundscape for listeners to explore as Sarah Howells adds her powerful vocals into the mix, while Anderholm shows off his melodic might with futuristic synths that still offer a flashback to the past, making this track feel like it could’ve been released in the ’80s to much praise as well.

That’s not all that Anderholm had in store, as he unleashed two solo tracks for fans to feast their ears on, “Phantom” and “The Day You Dazzled Me.” True to its name, “Phantom” offers a surreal soundscape with distant elements swirling in the background while the bassline lurches forward to keep the ride alive. Piano notes in the middle offer a brief, pensive moment, but Anderholm drops you straight back into the madness. On the flip side, “The Day You Dazzled Me” is a groovy, dancefloor-ready ride that incorporates some eerie synths and banging drums of its own that will uplift your soul during the final chapter of the EP. Both are gems; don’t sleep on these tunes!
