Narcan Is Now Available Over-The-Counter at Walgreens Nationwide

Walgreens is taking the next step in combatting opioid overdose deaths by making Narcan available at all of its locations nationwide.

The past few years have seen a rise in overdoses relating to fentanyl and other opioids, and many involved in the scene have begun to look for solutions to this widespread issue so that lives can be saved. Discussions surrounding the dangers of fentanyl, the importance of test kits, and the introduction of End Overdose at all events hosted by Insomniac have been major steps forward in spreading awareness and combatting this issue. More recently, another giant step has been taken by Walgreens, which now offers Narcan on an over-the-counter basis nationwide.

As of September 7, those who can afford or need immediate access to naloxone can visit their Walgreens to purchase Narcan Nasal Spray for $44.99. This follows the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval that arrived earlier this year. Additionally, it’s important to note that if you plan to carry Narcan or Naloxone, the generic form, it’s essential to educate yourself on identifying when an opioid overdose is happening and how to use it to save a life. To accomplish this, Walgreens and End Overdose have teamed up to create a new video that trains viewers on how to respond, which can be viewed on YouTube.

This community-first effort with Walgreens will hopefully empower everyone to feel comfortable carrying and administering naloxone nasal spray. Just as you might carry other first aid items, this can and should be something that is accessible to all.

Additionally, End Overdose has reasserted its commitment to helping those who don’t have the resources to access Narcan or naloxone and will continue to offer it free via their website after taking their online course. Walgreens has furthered its commitment to End Overdose beyond the partnered video with a donation of $100,000 for the charity to continue educating the public and destigmatizing the conversation around overdose.
