Legendary artist Moby has opened the next chapter of his creative journey with the launch of his new label, always centered at night.
Moby has carved out significant space in the electronic music scene as a truly iconic artist. From releasing some of the world’s most beloved tunes and racking up awards along the way to helping shift the narrative beyond music by becoming an animal rights activist, he’s intent on leaving no stone unturned. Now, Moby is embarking on his next chapter and is shaking up the “fear-driven, algorithmic-based culture” with a new label dubbed always centered at night.
Ignoring the structure that the current era of the scene has fallen into by releasing tracks that are catered specifically for streaming plays, Moby’s imprint intends to explore the idea of art and culture being a refuge from the mainstream. He’s hunting for artists who want to make something special, unique, and obscure without the confines of a specific runtime or desire for likes and shares on social platforms.
“The goal for always centered at night is to do something uncompromising,” said Moby when asked about the mission for this new imprint. “To make music that is emotional, atmospheric, and potentially beautiful. And what better use of this weird privilege I have than trying to foster creative expression that has uncompromising integrity?”
The notion behind always centered at night arrives from Moby’s own past of crate-digging for records to play out in the ’80s and ’90s. “A lot of the New York music I grew to love had this sort of unconventional beauty to it,” he said. “I’m hoping to pay homage to and honor that idea; that music can be beautiful, melodic, but also atmospheric and at times, challenging.”
The music found on always centered at night won’t be for everyone, but that’s just fine in Moby’s mind. Fans won’t have to wait long for the first release either as his collaboration with Aynzli Jones, “Medusa,” is out now across all streaming platforms. Paired with a music video, this fresh tune features a breakbeat with throbbing synths and a lyrical flow that will pang in the depths of your soul.
Check out the music video for “Medusa” on YouTube, download or stream the different versions of the track on your preferred platform, and stay tuned for more from Moby and always centered at night!
