Mantra Sounds Holds Nothing Back on ‘The 7 Deadly Sins’

Rising artist Mantra Sounds showcases a totally unique selection of tunes to blow bass music out of the water on The 7 Deadly Sins.

Hailing as one of the top rising female producers in the bass scene, Mantra Sounds didn’t come to play when releasing her unbounded style of tunes. With her multi-genre blending style of experimental bass, as well as featuring her lyricism and stunning vocals, this Jersey-based producer has garnered well-deserved attention. Singles like “Glass House” and “Potions” put her name on the map, and is now currently on tour cycles such as joining G Jones for his Illusory Tour stop in Boston, and raining hell on events like Moonwalk Festival and Yonderville this summer.

Now, Mantra Sounds has graced her listeners with her biggest project to date, The 7 Deadly Sins. This 10-track, heavy-hitting album with a whole new outlook on bass music production and is out now on Gradient Perspective. Further, this project is a collaboration with her alter ego persona, Grim Steez, which focuses on her vocal mastering and lyrical abilities. For any of those looking for a deeper dive into their curation of music, filled with vulnerability within lyrics atop a complex layering of basslines, this album hits it on the head.

As I close out this album, I am feeling more in tune with my art and project than I have in quite some time. It has been a rough past year unraveling this album; honing in on each of these sins, what they mean to me, and how I want them to be represented. This has been my biggest project yet and the making of it was absolutely draining at points. I lost sight of my discipline this past year and it truly showed through my creative process; sometimes it’s as hard as sitting down in the chair and opening up your DAW. Now that I can take a step back, I wouldn’t change anything about how all of these tracks were born. Sometimes tapping in can mean breaking down.

There’s a special experience when listening to this album in order, each track flowing perfectly into the other’s musical journey.

To ease you in the story, “Forbidden Fruit Intro” speaks on the grasps between our good side and bad side, with just a hint of the production the album contains. “Envy” debuts the Grim Steez touch with heavy, emotional vocals across a matching bassline with a trap-heavy beat and experimental flares – the distortion balancing evenly with the smooth beat.

“Greed” follows through, with a more chilled-out BPM but a perfect match in heavy vibes, speaking on the downsides of growing health, with a monotone yet rhythmic vocal pattern. For a more mellowed out experience, “Pride” takes subs to another level with an eerie guitar sample – matched with echoed vocals that fill the room of the track. The sampling styles and vocal manipulation shows off Mantra Sounds’ advancement in sound design on this one.

For a mid-album reflection, the “Purgatory Interlude” explores facing hell while reaching for our dreams, a true take on poetic lyricism. “Sloth,” despite the expected slower pace, will blow the listener’s mind out of the water with its more aggressive turn of events, with warping basslines and powerful vocal tonality. This one is fit for an expansive sound system, with its drum breaks and clever sampling styles. Then, “Gluttony” caters to an eerie, creeping buildup with an experimental, old-school dubstep-style break – complete with reverse vocals and grinding, rumbling bass to match the song’s theme.

Showcasing the perfect balance between her vocal ability and production value balance, “Lust” takes on a conversation between the instrumental background and the melodic, yet smooth lyrics. The vocals embody a sensual, smoothed-out track to balance out the high-energy tracks on the rest of the album.

The seventh sin, “Wrath,” embodies perfectly the inner anger and yearning for revenge that humans may face in life at some point. Its melancholy melody rides across an ascending bassline and delivers a no-holds-barred drop. The vulnerable take on lyricism and high-energy screams fit the tonality of the song, tugging right into our emotions – a personal standout on the album. To conclude, the “Affirmations Outro” completes The 7 Deadly Sins journey by touching on all the themes in each tune, with natural samples and personal touches across a beautiful passage on facing the reality of our faults as humanity.

Mantra Sounds didn’t have to go so hard in this album, but gave her fans a collection of well-produced tunes that poured her soul into a totally unique style of bass music. The 7 Deadly Sins is an album that all of us can at some point relate to, exposing our faults but acknowledging our truths. Be sure to check out Mantra Sounds on her upcoming tour stops, and blast this album on your sound system!
