Los Angeles-based artist Spency Be is just beginning his journey in the scene but he’s spun some house heaters to groove out to.
Southern California has played host to a number of different movements in the dance music scene over the years. Whether looking at the warehouse raves and massives or the vast array of artists spinning everything from bass to house music (and everything in-between), the impact the region has made it impossible to ignore. Because of this countless artists flock to cities like Los Angeles to cut their teeth in the scene, and Spency Be is one of the latest to land.
Born and raised in Texas, Spency Be made the jump to the West Coast in 2018 when he moved to the City of Angels to pursue his dream of becoming a DJ. His passion for dance music always existed and grew further after hearing his uncle play Mark Farina’s Mushroom Jazz mixes when he would visit Oakland. Disclosure’s Settle would be another milestone for him before diving into the sounds from Odesza, Chris Lake, Chris Lorenzo, Dombresky, and more recently, John Summit.
But it was Flume’s set at ACL Fest back in 2016 that pushed him into the electronic music realm after falling in love with the energy in the crowd. “The tremendous collective energy filled with acceptance, freedom, love got me hooked,” he said. “From that day forward I knew I didn’t just love dance music, I was IN love with it. It became a part of who I am as a person.”
His previous skills in making playlists for friends transitioned into his desire to jump behind the decks. After moving to LA he met Mark Lizaola while working behind-the-scenes at festivals and soon after, Spency began to take some classes on how to DJ from him after moving in together last year.
Although opportunities to play in front of others haven’t presented themselves often (yet, at least) he’s committed to honing in on his craft and begin exploring production as well. “This year I will learn Abelton and start producing my own tracks. I also hope to be able to play live shows by the end of the year, especially the underground warehouse scene. I really want to get opportunities to play there before the year is up.”
Stay tuned for more from Spency Be in the coming months – but until then, press play on the mix below and get in a groove.
