In a post-apocalyptic world, two survivors discover the power of human connection in the video for “Paper Thin” by ILLENIUM and Angels & Airwaves.
At the forefront of the melodic bass scene, Denver-based producer ILLENIUM has made his way into the hearts of fans with his emotive lyrics and symphony-like melodies. Always able to encapsulate emotions to a T, he worked his magic again with the release of the single, “Paper Thin,“ back in October. Now, the collaboration with Tom DeLonge and his band Angels & Airwaves has received its own music video that is eerily aligned to today’s world.
The “Paper Thin” music video starts by scanning over a post-apocalyptic world: a foreboding storm, dilapidated buildings, and someone in a gas mask. The masked person picks up a glowing stone from the rubble and reveals his face, which is scratched and dirtied, to inspect it further. He tucks it away and continues digging through the rubble, where he picks up a can — when out of nowhere, a girl hits him in the head and steals the can. He chases her through the building, and as they fight, it’s revealed that she, too, has a glowing stone around her neck.
When their stones come together, a surge of light and energy is released with enough force to knock them over. They then see that the energy from the stone healed the wounds on their bodies, seemingly revealing and restoring the innocence that was inside them before the world came to ruin. The two then traverse the post-apocalyptic scene together, learning that their stones, when combined, can breathe life into things — like bringing a dead plant back to life.
Their connection makes them both better and happier, which in turn, makes their dismal world a better, brighter place. And the music video reminds us that in times of crisis, we can find safe spaces in those around us and that genuine human connection can be incredibly healing.
