What So Not and Herizen Team Up To Release Dreamy Collab “We Can Be Friends”

What So Not has returned with an exciting collaboration with rising artist Herizen!

The drought of music from What So Not ended yesterday as fans everywhere rejoiced over the first release since his debut album Not All The Beautiful Things dropped last March. The track, titled “We Can Be Friends”, is a collaboration with singer-songwriter Herizen, a Florida native who’s best known for her role as Mylene Cruz on Netflix’s The Get Down.

Meeting at a writing camp in Nicaragua, What So Not and Herizen instantly hit it off with the track completely falling into place naturally. When asked about the release, Emoh explained “On the first take, Herizen belted out the chorus over some chords I was playing. We caught a moment and ran with it.” Herizen went on to speak about the meaning of the tune, stating that it was all about “letting go of someone you love for the better and feeling all the pain in that detachment, with the hope that it could end in friendship.”

This song may be the two’s first together, but their chemistry is clear and the meaning behind the track fits this bittersweetness perfectly. “We Can Be Friends” is a dreamy track featuring haunting vocals that toy with your emotions, with its melancholy lyrics hidden behind its lighthearted production. It’s truly a beautiful return from What So Not and an exciting glimpse into Herizen’s bright future as an artist.

Sydney Grant

Sydney attributes her love for music from her mom, who insisted on playing The Foo Fighters and The White Stripes rather than Kiss FM whenever she drove carpool and agreed to allow Sydney to attend Coachella in the eighth grade as long as she could go with her. That first festival only greater affirmed Sydney’s passion for the scene, but it was not until 2013 when she attended Swedish House Mafia’s One Last Tour concert in Los Angeles that she discovered electronic music. She was hooked instantly and has since attended a total of 23 festivals, with countless concerts in between. Sydney’s favorite artists include RL Grime, Jauz, Jai Wolf, Louis The Child, Slander, Bearson and Big Gigantic but she is constantly on the look out for new music and artists to dance to. When she’s not scouring the internet for new tracks or grooving at a concert, Sydney studies Journalism and Biology full-time at the University of Oregon.
