Wakaan founder Liquid Stranger just released “Gunslinger”, a buoyant bass adventure of a tune.
If we’re talking about the kings of freeform bass, we have to give due credit to one of the pioneers of this wonky wub movement. Swedish-born producer Martin Stääf has been producing under the Liquid Stranger moniker since 2003, making waves in the bass realm with some of the most unique spins on the genre. We’ve been noticing this artist has been absent from some huge bass festival lineups, and have been hoping for a resurfacing of this legend’s zonky tunes. Luckily, Liquid Stranger has gifted us with “Gunslinger”, an upbeat wobble master that we’ll never get enough of.
“I’m a, gunslinger, take you out with one finger!” What follows that line is a rippling crackle of slippery whomps and suction pops. It’s a nice diversion from the dark experimental path Liquid and many other bass artists have been on (though we’ll never get enough of dark wubs). “Gunslinger” is a piping hot bone-jiggler of a bop, simultaneously triggering bass faces and overcoming bodies with its irresistible bass snips. “Gunslinger” clocks in at a little over six minutes, and we love every second.
Recently, producers have been bringing back longer tracks that weave more of a story than a tune churned out in three minutes, such as FuntCase‘s remix of Snails’ and Dion Timmer’s “Forever”. Each percussion clap and chunky wobble in “Gunslinger” draws you further under its spell, escalating in sizzling experimental energy and crafting an elaborate bass voyage. We expect nothing less from this Wakaan legend, and we couldn’t be more excited for his future creations.
Speaking of future creations, Liquid Stranger recently tweeted out what we’ve all been waiting for: a message confirming new shows are on the horizon. The people have been calling for a Wakaan-curated event, and we couldn’t help but notice both Wakaan’s and Liquid Stranger’s responses to some of the tweets, hinting that the freeform mayhem our bodies yearn for may be coming sooner than we think. Be on the lookout for a tour announcement in the near future where you can get jazzy to “Gunslinger” live!
