Hot Since 82 kicked off his Even Deeper project in Mexico last year, and now you can follow the journey he took through Japan!
British DJ and producer Daley Padley, better known as Hot Since 82, has been providing some epic house sets around the world for many years. Looking to provide some insight into his travels as a DJ last year, he kicked off his Even Deeper project. The first documentary short film followed him to Mexico, where viewers followed Padley as he ate, explored, and partied with the locals. Now, a year later, the UK native takes the project to Japan, where the film follows him as he plays a surprise pop-up show above the Shibuya Crossing, tries squid for the first time, and does some epic sight-seeing.
Even Deeper Japan may only be a little over eleven minutes long but somehow fits in six full cities and five shows. Viewers get to experience all different aspects of Japan with Padley, from the bustling Tokyo to the smaller port city, Takamatsu. The venues Padley plays at vary as well. The film follows the DJ as he acclimated to playing for an entirely different crowd than he’s used to. Even at Contact, the famous underground nightclub in Tokyo, Padley comments on how many times he could be playing for up to 2,000 people, whereas in Japan it’s more common for a venue to only house 100-200 people.
When Padley isn’t performing is perhaps when the film becomes most unique in that rather than simply acting as a promotion for his music, the film manages to capture the essence of the Japanese culture itself. Check it out below and read on for our take on the documentary short and some insight from Hot Since 82 himself.

The best part about Even Deeper Japan is that it leaves you not only wanting to know more about Hot Since 82’s music but also wanting to know more about the nation it’s set in.
My favorite part of the video was probably the easiest for Padley and his team to shoot. He joins an old friend and his wife for dinner at their home and although the scenic shots of the Japanese skyline are beautiful, what I really love about this video is the effort Padley made to capture the heart of the people who live there. Get some insight on the project from Hot Since 82 below and let us know what your thoughts are on the documentary in the comments!
“Even Deeper is a concept very close to my heart, it allows me to spend more time in a country and to really immerse myself in its culture and history. Playing more intimate shows, meeting people and really understanding their way of life, something that can very easily pass you by when the DJ life is usually airport > hotel > club > airport…”
