What was your first electronic music event?
Bassnectar’s Vava Voom Tour in Seattle back in 2012.
What/who influenced you to attend your first event?
I had only started listening to EDM a year or so before that and saw he was coming to town, decided to go on a whim and HOLY HELL I was blown away. I couldn’t believe how much more awesome it was than any other show I’d been to before.
What is one moment from an event that was special and why?
I took my date to her first rave to see Seven Lions, and it blew her mind. She turned to me during his set and said she wanted to officially be my girlfriend. A year and a half later, I proposed to her during Seven Lions’s set at EDC Las Vegas 2016 and now we’re married!
What is your favorite festival or event?
Paradiso will always have a special place in my heart because it’s at The Gorge and it was also my first big festival….but it has nothing on EDC Las Vegas. Holy crap that is just spectacular.
What is your favorite electronic song and why?
Wow, that’s a tough one! probably “Drive It Like You Stole It” by The Glitch Mob. They were the first electronic artist I ever listened to and the bridge from rock & rap into almost exclusively electronic music for me.
Who are your favorite artists?
The Glitch Mob, Seven Lions, Bassnectar, Nero, Excision, Adventure Club, Porter Robinson… I could keep going forever.
What are your favorite genres?
Dubstep and all things bass music are my first and true love. But recently I’ve been getting into progressive house, some trance. I can pretty much find something I like in every genre… Except for hardstyle, that gives me a headache.
What do you feel your “Identity” is in the electronic music community?
I’m an animator and an artist, so seeing all of the cool visual stuff that often accompanies live performances is equally pleasing to me as the music itself. I think my identity is as twofold, one as an appreciator of what the artists are playing, and two as a contributing artist. I make Illustrations, and visuals for concerts, and logos and stuff for EDM.
Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself for the readers?
While I have done illustration and design for EDM artists, I really would like to do more high-level animation for concerts and tours. If you or someone you know wants that, please reach out to me!
Check out my work at ianfrederick.com or behance.net/ianfrederick and even if you don’t want that, reach out anyways I always love meeting new people!
