#TBT || Claude VonStroke – Beat That Bird (feat. Justin Martin)

In honor of the first-ever edition of Dirtybird Campout East Coast, today’s #TBT features a track by two of Dirtybird’s biggest stars.

With the inaugural edition of Dirtybird Campout East Coast taking flight today, it seemed only appropriate that our throwback track should come from the beloved aviary itself this week. And with that in mind, given the funky, booty-shakin’, and sometimes downright weird flavor of the festival, I wanted to give you a track that represents all of those things. Enter “Beat That Bird“, the eighth track on Claude VonStroke‘s second studio album, Bird Brain.

Pulling a sample from Johnny Dangerous’ 1992 club banger “Beat That Bitch With a Bat” (no, really, it’s a real song – not just a joke made for that one episode of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), “Beat That Bird” is a study in simplicity and abject weirdness, brought to you by VonStroke and perennial label-mate and pal, Justin Martin.

The tune starts off unobtrusively enough, with just enough percussion and weird sounds to keep it moving before dropping into the vocal, which repeats over and over again in stranger and stranger filters, from an alienistic feel to something that sounds basically like a belch. The duo even throw it back to the original vocal – if you listen carefully enough at the beginning, you can hear a voice whispering “that bitch with a bat” repeating itself as well. This thing has layers!

Subsequent VonStroke tunes have been no less weird, with their share of evil laughs, strange sound effects, and somewhat unsettling tones inserted within them. In fact, it’s one of his wonderful calling cards and something that has given him a reputation for being an artist with far less pretension than talent, something that can be altogether too rare in the electronic music scene.

So kick back, relax, and enjoy one of VonStroke’s earlier tunes – and if you’re headed to St. Cloud this weekend, we’ll see you there (and maybe even hit up the Beat The Bird piñata event in the campground on Saturday while you’re at it!).

Erin has been listening to electronic music on and off since the early 2000s, which is when trance music captured her heart and soul. Over the years, she has expanded into a number of other styles and genres, especially techno and house. Originally from Chicago, she spent the better part of the last decade seeking out any electronic music she could find, and traveled the length of the country in search of some incredible moments at festivals like EDC, TomorrowWorld, and the Dirtybird Campout. Having since settled in Denver, she focuses her energies primarily on the house and techno scene around town and traveling to mountain and west coast festivals whenever possible.
