“What Is Love” became a cultural Eurodance hit in the 90s at clubs and on radio and television
Fans of Eurodance from the 90s will surely remember Haddaway’s hit song “What Is Love” with its catchy hook and pop culture crossover. The Trinidadian-German artist released the song in 1993 and became #1 in 13 countries and peaked at #11 on US Billboard Hot 100. Nearly 20 years later, Eminem and Lil Wayne sampled the song in their 2010 song titled “No Love” further cementing the lasting impact of Haddaway’s powerful message.
“What Is Love” provided the perfect soundtrack to the Saturday Night Live skit “The Roxbury Guys” featuring Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan, and Jim Carrey. The skit featured the song playing in the background as the guys attended clubs attempting to pick up women, but ultimately failing to do so. A subsequent movie, “A Night at the Roxbury”, was released and is considered a classic to this day. The popular song and skit was even immortalized as a meme after being featured on YTMND in 2005.
