In honor of Deadmau5’s announcement as one of Countdown NYE’s headliners, let’s go back to my favorite track of his, “The Veldt.”
Released in 2012 on Ultra Records, right at the peak of Deadmau5’s popularity and electronic music’s first move into the mainstream, “The Veldt” represents one of my favorite eras of dance music.
“The Veldt” is one song that I can listen to over and over again and never grow tired of it. It was one of the very first electronic songs I ever listened to, and to this day its melody and vocals are some of the sweetest sounds I’ve ever heard. The track was first released in The Veldt EP along with remixes by Tommy Trash and Freeform Five, and then later re-released in Deadmau5’s album <Album Title Goes Here>.
The track draws from Ray Bradbury’s short sci-fi story about two children who use a virtual reality room to make whatever they so desire. “The Veldt” never fails to relax me and leave me with a smile on my face. For its eight minute duration, the track takes you on a journey in which you have the power to create your own world, just as those two children do. The chords throughout the song are pure and hopeful, giving the track an overall feel-good sentiment.
I wish I could go back to the progressive house era of 2012, but until someone invents a time machine I’ll happily keep listening back to tracks like this one. “The Veldt” will always have a special place in my heart, give it a listen and let it take you back!

Deadmau5 – The Veldt – Lyrics
Happy life with the machines
Scattered around the room
Look what they made
They made it for me
Happy technology
Outside the lions run
Feeding on remains
We’ll never leave
Look at us now
So in love with the way we are
Here
The world that the children made
The world that the children made
Here
The world that the children made
Here
The world that the children made
Every night
They rock us to sleep
Digital family
Is it real or is it a dream
Can you believe in machines
Outside the beating sun
Can you hear the screams
We’ll never leave
Look at us now
So in love with the way we are
Here
The world that the children made
The world that the children made
Here
The world that the children made
Here
The world that the children made
