Coldharbour Recordings has attained its 250th release with owner Markus Schulz’s new track ‘Sestertius‘. This classical trance piece stays true to the genre in which Schulz has made a name without being derivative or cliché. The intro is upbeat and lighthearted, fading into almost silence before the track really hits its stride. Playful percussive lines stack on top of the gentle bass, supporting the alluring melody and taking the listener on a relaxing, emotional journey. The tune evoked simultaneous feelings of nostalgia and joy in me, in the way that much trance does, and I can easily listen to it over and over again. The genre is called “trance” for a reason –– for those of us who love to lose ourselves in the light and uncomplicated beat, this is a perfect song to fall into.
Once again Schulz has demonstrated his mastery of the musicality and emotion that sets trance apart, reaching his audience with poignancy not found in other styles of EDM. The title, when translated from Latin, means “two and a half,” a sophisticated way to acknowledge his label’s accomplishment of two and half hundred tracks. The celebratory significance of ‘Sestertius‘ is reflected in its effervescent quality. Thanks to its simplicity and unique style, this track can touch souls in any setting, whether its pouring out of speakers to a thousands-strong crowd, or adding a pleasant background to your daily commute.
