What was your first electronic music event?
I saw What So Not, RL Grime, Dillon Francis, and Skrillex in Cleveland a few years back. At least, that’s what I think the lineup was. All of them killed the sets that night.
What/who influenced you to attend your first event?
Friends invited me to go out, plus I have always big a big supporter and follower of Skrillex.
What is one moment from an event that was special and why?
There are a couple, over at Bassmnt in San Diego: Riot Ten was performing, asking where the after party was going to be. He took a crowd member’s phone and put his number in it and told the guy to text him the address. Also at the end of the night, Riot Ten made sure that anyone who wanted a picture with him got one. I was able to talk to him for a bit and get a picture with him. It was pretty tight.
The other moment was at the Skrillex show I attended. I remember at the end of his show he thanked everyone for coming out and said something along the lines of “It’s never too late to do what you want to do. Follow your dreams, and they will come true as long as you stick with the right people.”
Sort of a life changer for me honestly. It’s been able to keep me pushing for my dreams and to get what I want.
What is your favorite festival or event?
I haven’t had the chance to attend a festival yet. The Skrillex event was definitely the best for me, but Bassmnt always throws down some good shows. They always have big names coming through and I was in attendance for the San Holo show and the place was so packed. I heard that one of the open DJ’s sold around 200 tickets himself. It was a good night.
What is your favorite electronic song and why?
That is a hard one for me because I’m very picky and particular on what makes, in my opinion, a good song. That being said, I’ll just go with one of my favorite Electronic Songs at the moment and that would have to be “DEJ LOAF – DESIRE (MEGAMAOR REMIX)” and one that has recently ‘wowed’ me is 4B x Aazar – Pop Dat (Cultr Remix).
Who are your favorite artists?
- Skrillex is my top, most likely always will be.
- MEGAMAOR of Bad Royale, this dude is my second favorite at the moment.
- Jack Ü, game changing. It’s a bit of a bummer that there is a “big label” thing preventing them from releasing another record at the moment.
- Mura Masa – the track “Hell” is so flame.
- Bad Royale – I like their Jack Ü sounding material the best.
- Boaz (formerly Boaz Van De Beatz) – love the Trap productions and quality of his sound.
What are your favorite genres?
- Trap
- Deep House – ooh I love Deep House, used to not be a fan, so glad that changed.
- Dubstep – as long as it’s not just a ton of noise. It has to have good rhythm and a nicely constructed sound.
- House
- Electro House
- Bounce
What do you feel your “Identity” is in the electronic music community?
I feel like my ‘Identity’ is to be a part of what Electronic Music is and to help it grow & evolve into the next level.
As a producer, I’m always on the lookout for a unique sound and something new that I can use in my productions that have never been used before by anyone else. It isn’t easy to do that because it has to sound right, it has to sound good, and it has to not be too try hard.
As a DJ, I’m constantly keeping an open ear for that sound that is going to make me move and that I know will make a crowd move. Sure, doing top 40 all night can get the crowd moving, but I like to find untapped talent and potential that sounds completely new and different. Kind of like how I mentioned in my production skillset. Unique.
As a person, I am willing to work for what I want out of the Electronic Music community. I love to network with people. It’s always fun talking to those who have a similar taste in music style that I do. Even if they have a different taste, it’s always refreshing to hear a different opinion that may give me a different outlook and help me understand more.
I like to lend a helping hand to venues and Producer/DJs in need who are truly passionate about the industry. I basically live and breathe it every day, constantly hearing new things in my head that I can take to the studio and put into production. Always thinking about what songs would go extremely well mixed together in a set. Continuously open to supporting the local scene and talent. Whether it be venues, DJs, producers, promoters, photographers…..basically anyone who is trying to passionately move forward the Electronic Music industry and community into a good direction to promise it a continued bright future.
My ‘Identity’ isn’t always an easy one, but It’s my favorite one. And I’m proud to have it. It’s a lot of work that people don’t always see on the surface.
Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself for the readers?
Thanks to everyone who goes out to their local Electronic Music venue, everyone who buys music, everyone who treats not only the DJs and producers good: but eachother as well. This is a community and we are all in it together, so having fun and being united is really important.
And most of all: My biggest thank you goes to those who support the local talent and gives them a chance. In being selfless and promoting someone to their personal next level…..It’s indescribable. Probably one of the most selfless things you can do, and every little bit helps. Trust me when I say, it means a lot and I personally would like to thank you for being a good person and truly doing something just to help another person out.
