GameChops Artist Spotlight || Grimecraft

Abisola Oseni by Abisola Oseni
March 16, 2017
in Interviews

This month, EDM Identity will be highlighting four artists from video game music label, GameChops! The second DJ we’re highlighting is Grimecraft!

Clarke Nordhauser has played and performed music for years, however, it wasn’t until 2012 that his unique and influential moniker, Grimecraft, came into existence. He previously worked at a video game company but felt that his purpose would lead him in a different direction. Thankfully Grimecraft followed his intuition and set out to pursue his passion for music. His hunch was spot on as Grimecraft has gone on to be an unbelievably successful and prolific artist. He’s toured the world, released music on multiple labels and produces a weekly music show called Grimecraft and Friends on Twitch.

We implore you to take a visit to any of his social media pages and see how much love and admiration his fans have for him. Likewise, it’s easy to tell how much he appreciates his fans. They love how he masterfully incorporates his love of video games and electronic music, and often a bit of bass, to create an amazing creative sound as well as his signature hair.

What was your inspiration in becoming a DJ?

For a while I was doing an electronic project using live synths guitar and a computer, It was a rough setup and took a lot of time and energy to prep sets. I tried DJing with control Vinyl once when an opener let me mess around and thought it was fun.

What inspired you to focus on Video Game music?

I’ve always been inspired by video games and video game music. Around the time I started DJing I was in college studying to be a game developer, so video games kind of consumed my life. I thought to develop a style of mixing video game music with EDM and it was something I was getting booked for a lot. I discovered Dj CUTMAN around that time and wished to one day work with him. He hired me to design an album cover for a remix project he was working on. We later met at PAX East is Boston and have been friends ever since.

Having a specific “sound” is important in the EDM world. How would you describe your sound?

Video Game Bangers.

If you could play a b2b set with any artist, who would it be and why?

Kill The Noise – We actually have tagged a few times and it’s always been awesome. I love firing off the heaviest dubstep bangers with friends.

Do you have a favorite event that you’ve been able to play?

MAGFest will always be number one, but there are many others. I always love playing events at E3. Broke LA and Lightning In A Bottle were fun too. I toured Japan and those events were all super fun too! I’ve played a lot of events that I have fond memories of.

What about the Electronic Music scene/Video Game Music scene specifically speaks to you?

Video Game Music scene is really genuine. I find my supporters are very active and passionate. I connect with them, it’s a great relationship. Any fan to me is a friend.

If you could pick 3 artists to listen to for the rest of your life, who would they be and why?
  • Alon Mor – Super amazing underground producer from Isreal. Very diverse sounds with amazing sound design.
  • Nobuo Uematsu – I can listen to Final Fantasy Music all day and never get bored
  • Coheed and Cambria – Favorite band ever.
Which artist was your introduction to Electronic Music?

I think Flying Lotus/Rustie/Hudson Mohawke triggered my dive into Electronic Music

What is your favorite event that you have attended?

MAGFest

What’s in store for your fans for the rest of 2017? Any surprises or new releases coming up?

I’m launching a VR Social Music platform called TheWaveVR – so expect a lot of stuff on that front. I’ve got some touring to announce soon and of course a lot of music!

What is your favorite ice cream?

Cookie Dough
