What was your first electronic music event?
Nocturnal Wonderland 1998 – at the National Orange Show in San Bernardino. All these years later, I only wish I had saved some of the memorabilia!
What/who influenced you to attend your first event?
At the time, I was hanging out with a high school friend who knew a guy who knew a guy who was into the scene. They told me about it, I figured “Why in the hell not?” I had never been to a “rave” as we called them then and someone else was going, so I went too. The rest is history.
What is one moment from an event that was special and why?
Last year, 2016, was my first Electric Daisy Carnival (and only my second rave, ever) so it was special for me the moment I walked into the Speedway in Las Vegas with my wife and all those old feelings came flooding back of the awesome time I had at Nocturnal all those years ago! I was enveloped by the music and culture that I remembered so fondly from the days of my youth. All those old feelings came rushing back like a wave into the shoreline.
What is your favorite festival or event?
Since I have only been to two in my whole life, I’d say EDC hands down. Nocturnal was fun, but that was a different time and I was a different person than I am now. We are going to explore more festivals in 2017, so this is subject to change.
What is your favorite electronic song and why?
“Blue Sky Action” – Above and Beyond. Why? Because my inspiration for wanting to attend EDC was seeing their 2015 live set on YouTube. In turn, experiencing it in person in 2016 changed my life. I interpret the song as the story of a man stuck in a boring life, experiencing the same old stuff every day. In the end, he gets himself some “Blue Sky Action” meaning that he takes a chance, changes his perspective and his life changes. Sound familiar?
Who are your favorite artists?
Above and Beyond is my absolute fave right now, followed by any artist from Anjunabeats. I will listen to just about anything though, from Axwell / Ingrosso to Zhu. I do have a soft spot in my heart for Seven Lions, however. This is mainly due to his story of being an everyday dude in a rock band and his friends were hard to nail down for practice; he consequently turned to electronic music and is ever-evolving his style.
Other artists I love include Alesso, Axwell /\ Ingrosso, Calvin Harris, Duke Dumont, Fatboy Slim, KDrew, Lucas Gravell, Martin Garrix, Marshmello, Oliver Smith, Ookay, and the list goes on… it’s always evolving.
What are your favorite genres?
Trance, House, Drum & Bass, Progressive House, Tech House, some Trap, and melodic Dubstep too.
What do you feel your “Identity” is in the electronic music community?
I’m the guy who’s been around for a while. Since my first exposure to it was before a lot of folks today were even born, I can offer insight into those years. As a fairly new attendee to recent festivals, I can compare/contrast accordingly. We all know life gets in the way sometimes, and I would say that is the chief reason that I am not way more involved in the scene. I feel like I’m the one who has experienced life and all of its ins and outs. I bring that experience to the table and am also in a constant state of transition myself. My life now is malleable, and subject to change!
Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself for the readers?
I am married to the love of my life, Ashley, and we have four kids. By day, I’m a normal guy with a normal job but catch me at a music festival and let’s have a good time! I’m also very outgoing and will talk to anyone. I am not shy AT ALL. I’m super friendly and will talk to anyone about anything. So, if you see me at an event, come shake my hand or give me a hug and say hi. I won’t bite, I promise!
