“Release” is the fourth single from Tinlicker’s fourth studio album, Dreams of the Machine, and it marks their shift to entirely live performances.

For the last decade, electronic act Tinlicker has created progressive house and techno that’s emotive and melodic yet dancefloor friendly. The former duo of Micha Heyboer and Jordi van Achthoven recently added a permanent new member in vocalist Hero Baldwin and are now segueing into entirely live performances. Coinciding with their latest single, “Release,” they have also revealed the title and release date of their fourth studio album. Dreams of the Machine is due out on February 27 via Remember The Future/[PIAS], exploring the concept of AI-led technology and how we, as humans, fit in.

Following Tinlicker’s usual formula of mixing melodic, organic sounds with high-energy breaks, “Release” also incorporates more robotic synths and wompy bass. Baldwin’s vocals critique our habitual phone use, giving the listener food for thought by imploring us to stay present in our daily lives. Baldwin is fully in her element, completing the Tinlicker sound and adding that je ne sais quoi we didn’t know was missing.

‘Release’ is about how easily we slip out of the moment. The habit of checking and responding instantly on our phones and how that slowly takes over our attention to each other. We’re not anti-technology, perhaps just quietly aware of what disappears when distraction becomes automatic. ‘Release’ is about pausing and staying in the moment with the people around you.

The fourth single to come out in anticipation of Dreams of the Machine, “Release” gives even more insight into the group’s live performance format. Through 14 tracks, the album highlights the group’s use of live instruments, soulful vocals, and lyrics, while also thoughtfully incorporating technology, touching again on the question: “Where is the boundary between human and machine?”

Following the album release, the trio will embark on a live tour throughout the UK and Europe in March, starting in Berlin with European festival dates slated for June. North American dates will be announced shortly, ensuring that attendees from all over the world can experience the new Tinlicker format live.

Listen to “Release” on Spotify or your preferred platform, and pre-order Dreams of the Machine on their official website. To catch Tinlicker on tour in the UK or Europe, visit their official website and secure tickets.
