Today, it’s been a decade since RÜFÜS DU SOL’s album, BLOOM, was released. People still feel like they’re hearing it for the first time, every time.
Everyone’s 2016 throwback posts sent us crate digging to find out what music was fresh off the press a decade ago. It’s hard to believe RÜFÜS DU SOL‘s album, BLOOM, fits in that category, but it does. The album that brought us together and healed our wounds for ten years feels just as new as the day it dropped. That’s what happens when you make music as timeless as that of RÜFÜS.
Before BLOOM, RÜFÜS had already laid serious groundwork with two EPs and their debut album, Atlas. The traction kept building as their music reached farther across the globe, past their roots in Australia. Their rise to stardom was just on the cusp of success, and then BLOOM catapulted them — and their listeners, for that matter — into new dimensions. With tracks like “You Were Right,” “Like an Animal,” and “Innerbloom,” it reprogrammed the scene’s brain chemistry forever.

Most RÜFÜS DU SOL fans can remember where they were when they first heard BLOOM.
The inner transformation begins with “Brighter.” Rain trickles down as a lyrics describe the helpless feeling of wanting a love that doesn’t want you back. That love, that in that moment, feels like it makes everything brighter, even the sunshine. This track showed fans that we all have felt love and love lost.
“Like An Animal” visits another love-struck ballad. It portrays a love as loyal as a man’s best friend at his side, the type that can never be abandoned, even if they part ways. I still remember the feeling this song gave me when I first heard it. Getting to relive it when they played it in Denver last year made it all come rushing back.
You were right
I know I can’t get enough of you
Leave it all to bloom
The next three songs took over not just sonically, but visually, too, thanks to their music videos. “Say a Prayer for Me” took a more realistic approach, splicing clips of the members playing the song with nature shots, and mesmerizing lighting. While “You Were Right” and “Be with You” took on scenes more like movie clips that perfectly wrap the emotions the music provokes in a bow. “You Were Right” is definitely one of the top tracks from the album that earned its spot to play out at every RÜFÜS set to this day.
The hopeless romantics are thriving throughout the first half of the album, and the yearning only grows more in the second.
“Daylight” and “Hypnotised” hold hands with admiration. Fans love to get lost in these two tantalizing tracks. You can feel the weightlessness take over you as the energy shifts from lost love to getting lost in love. Love is always a battle between highs and lows, and this album captures that side of common emotions perfectly as we sway between the two.
“Tell Me” reminds listeners that the energies we surround ourselves with can’t always last, but the great thing is that the message comes with a softer delivery from RÜFÜS’ angelic frequencies.
If you want me
If you need me
I’m yours
“Until the Sun Needs to Rise” brought up a lot of feelings for listeners. The choice between love and life — along with the obstacles thrown into the mix — forces major decisions. What do you choose? Do you chase your dreams with your lover, or do your paths have to separate? Many have had to make this very same choice in their life, which is why so many connect with the song’s lyrics.
Have you ever been completely infatuated with someone that you can’t think straight? “Lose My Head” implies a blissful surrender when the words “sinking through colors of you” ring out.
The song of the album — and, perhaps, decade — “Innerbloom” closes out this journey. Goosebumps expand all over your body even with just the mention of this track. You can’t recreate the feeling of hearing this one live, especially once the music slows for the part we all know too well. It’s the moment in the song that can be heard for miles at any event RÜFÜS plays, as the electronic piano strikes those poignant chords. Without fail, the crowd chimes in at the top of their lungs, “If you want me, if you need me, I’m yours.”
BLOOM healed hearts and brought lovers closer, all in one album. The power of these 11 tracks holds strong a decade later.
As we celebrate the ten-year anniversary of an album that we hold dearly in our hearts, we invite you to go down memory lane.
How did BLOOM change your perspective on electronic music? For me, it changed everything. It reminded me just how connected we all are, each heart crying out together in joy or pain as each track plays out to the crowd set after set, year after year, for ten years and beyond. Thank you, RÜFÜS, for being the voice of the generation.
