In his latest album, Contact, Sub Focus proves that he knows his way around drum and bass.
Sub Focus has had an incredibly prolific music career at the forefront of drum and bass, and he shows no signs of slowing down. After 20 years into making music, he is somehow at the height of his career. His 2025 was marked by sold-out performances of his live Circular Sound show in London and Los Angeles, and he made history as the first drum and bass artist to headline Red Rocks as part of the WORSHIP collective.
Throughout all of this, he has been releasing collaborative singles and teasing unreleased IDs leading up to the release of his fourth studio album, Contact, on November 21. The album is a 14-track odyssey showing the full range of Sub Focus’ artistry and 20-year evolution.
“I’m really proud of this one. Drum & Bass is in such rude health right now — and I wanted to make a full length all about the genre this time around,” Sub Focus wrote on Instagram.
Right from the start, Sub Focus goes full throttle with “Ecuador” featuring Fireboy DML, immediately kicking the momentum into high gear. Fireboy DML carries the track forward with lyrics that paint a vivid picture of a wild night out, screaming “everybody going crazy on the dancefloor” before an explosive drop of syncopated beats, rolling basslines, and catchy plucks. “Ecuador” is a crowd-igniting track that feels built for dancefloors. It’s impossible to sit still through the drop, even while listening alone in your bedroom.
The mood shifts dramatically into the second song, “So Many Colours” featuring Poppy Baskcomb, a prominent vocalist in dance music. This transition encapsulates the emotional rollercoaster of a rave, from going crazy on the dancefloor to swaying arm-in-arm with the homies or even serenading a rave bae.
Infectious hooks and expressive vocals remain a hallmark of Sub Focus’ sound, elevated by the eclectic vocalists featured across the album. Fireboy DML makes a second appearance on the album alongside IRAH on Contact’s third track, “Original Don,” whose reggae vocals infuse it with a rhythmic swagger that distinguishes it from the album’s early stretch.
Meanwhile, “On & On” with bbyclose and “Push The Tempo” with Katy B deliver bright and polished vocal hooks with melodic production. Then, mellower vocals glide over liquid soundscapes in “Water & Fire” with Connie Constance and “Lost In Heaven” with Emily Makis.
Sub Focus’ collaborative efforts with other producers are highlights of Contact. “Go Back” with John Summit and Julia Church was the song of the summer in 2024, but it still hits just as hard over a year later by showcasing Sub Focus’ versatility and crossover appeal. “Go Back” is an ambitious collision of house and DnB whose risks paid off, bringing heightened awareness to the latter genre with a melodious anthem that seamlessly bridges both artists’ styles. On the other hand, “Roll Too Deep” with rising DnB producer Subsonic is a dancefloor-ready banger. According to the song itself, it’s a record perfect for playing on repeat.
As much as these collaborations highlight Sub Focus’ knack for working with other producers, his solo work delivers some of the album’s most memorable and potent moments. On “Let Your Body Rock,” he turns the titular phrase into a hypnotic mantra, mirrored by a rolling, hypnotic groove layered over airy synths and precise percussive snares. The track isn’t about heavy-hitting impact. Rather, it rides a steady momentum that invites movement. “Elevate,” meanwhile, pairs melodic, energetic rhythms with magnetic vocals, all built on Sub Focus’ crisp, meticulous production.
There are three bonus tracks on Contact, including a “Wildfire” VIP and an Alice in Wonderland-themed collab with Dimension called “Strange Places,” although they are only available on a USB edition that sold out before the album’s official release. Both Sub Focus and Dimension have played out the latter song at recent shows. Here’s to hoping they release it to the general public soon, because it is stunning.
It’s been an exciting few months for drum and bass fans who’ve gotten so much new music from their favorite producers. Even amid all the clamor, Contact cements Sub Focus’ status as a leading force in modern drum and bass.
