Mr. Bill Paints a Starry Dream-World on ‘Mr. Melanzana’

Mr. Bill teamed up with fellow producers Spoonbill, Tipper, COPYCATT, and more on his latest self-released project, Mr. Melanzana.

A few weeks after his audiovisual set with Funilab at Tipper’s final Red Rocks show, Mr. Bill has wasted no time putting the dreamy performance into the world. He’s just released their full live set, Sequenza di Melanzane, or “Sequence of Eggplants,” as well as his latest collection of tunes, a full album entitled Mr. Melanzana, or “Mr. Eggplant.”

Mr. Bill dropped this brand-new LP, a self-release, just over a year after the release of his debut album, Mechanomorphic. Lately, more artists than ever, especially within the bass community, are getting rid of the middleman and ditching labels.

There was a time when new labels were popping up left and right, with some over-promising and underselling artists. Self-releasing is undoubtedly the new wave in 2025. Mr. Bill joined in with an impressive 16 tracks on Mr. Melanzana, many of which were featured in his and Funilab’s Red Rocks performance, and with some new gems sprinkled throughout.

The opening track, “Germination,” slowly but surely, sets the vibe for the following beats to come with a steady buildup that morphs into a peculiar lullaby.

The slow-build continues with vibey offerings like “Dino Tippioli,” “Sporidium,” and “Detritus,” before the pace picks up. “Talisman,” a groovy halftime banger, is guaranteed to keep anyone bobbing and dancing onto the next. Fellow groove-oriented producer COPYCATT joins the mix for another higher-energy track, “Nerves VIP.” Mr. Bill’s smoother style takes COPYCATT’s harsh halftime energy down a notch for a perfect blend of the two’s production styles.

The next collaborator, Spoonbill, brings even more weirdness to Mr. Melanzana with “Pentimento.” A true “experimental bass” track that still has a halftime beat under all of the distortions and wobbles, making for a super-satisfying tune. It’s not long before ethereal-sounding downtempo takes over once again in tracks like “Violet Shroud” and “Cascaded Strings VIP.”

While it’s hard to take the whole “eggplant” theme of Mr. Melanzana seriously, one of the prettiest tracks on the album is ironically the second-to-last tune, “Eggplant Sequence.” Its headnod-style, downtempo beat is not only infectious but beautiful, and lights the path to the final offering and Tipper collaboration, “Burton Pigmentation.” A dreamy track fit for an album closer, the two created a slow blend of brain-tickling downtempo that sounds straight from a psychedelic storybook.

Mr. Melanzana is available everywhere now, so head to Spotify or your preferred platform to dive into Mr. Bill’s sonic escape.
