Super-Frog Saves Tokyo dives into different genres from trance to techno to craft the immersive soundscapes on his second studio album, Beams.
Much of the modern dance music scene has been dominated by maximalist sounds that are larger-than-life and clearly geared for festival stages. Yet there is a thriving underbelly of producers who are making music that bucks that trend, and one artist within that realm is Super-Frog Saves Tokyo. Press play on his various releases that have landed on labels like Pure Trance and Electronic Architecture, and you’ll quickly fall in love with his immersive soundscapes.
Super-Frog Saves Tokyo’s debut album, Straw Man, turned heads when it was released in 2022. Now, the artist has returned with another offering to the electronic gods with the release of his sophomore album, Beams. The release, now available via Electronic Architecture, features eight tracks that pay homage to the ’90s dance scene while incorporating modern elements, creating a ride that seamlessly blends past and future.
“It’s an album born of a singular vision,” said Super-Frog Saves Tokyo. “Each track stands on its own, but they also connect – they’re built to work together as a whole piece. It’s music that straddles genres from Balearic trance to ear-splitting techno, via ambient soundscapes, but at all times remaining anchored with memorable hooks and melodies.”
“Drench” begins that ride with Super-Frog Saves Tokyo, packing in a dose of electronica to set the mood. From there, you’ll quickly find yourself immersed in the hypnotic soundscapes of “Scream,” “Mondrago,” and “Clarion,” all of which see this maestro layer in everything from analog basslines and glitchy builds to melodic arps and emotive pads for added effect. The latter of those three is pure trance at its finest, filling listeners with energy to keep chugging along across its near-nine-minute runtime before the waves of ambient wash over on “Ascend” for a break from the action.
Super-Frog Saves Tokyo gets a little funky after the break, throwing down “Minds” that features acid tones that harken back to ’90s techno while warping your mind. Then, it’s time to dive even deeper into the industrial realm on “Insidious,” and it’s as dark, gritty, and abrasive as its name implies, as glitchy elements and breaks fill the soundscape. Yet Super-Frog Saves Tokyo wasn’t done there. The final track, “Lumiere,” rises like a phoenix from the ashes with its warm, uplifting tones, piano riffs, and Baleric-infused groove that marks the finale of this immense ride into the electronic realm.
