Modestep’s first full-length album in over a decade, Give Up The Ghost, offers a glimpse into the future of the music industry as technology continues to advance.
It’s been more than a decade since bass music DJ and producer Modestep released a full-length album. Now a solo act, his latest body of work, Give Up The Ghost, is being dubbed the most ambitious drop to date.
With a futuristic and dark edge, the new album raises questions about the next phase of music and technology. Fusing drum and bass, dubstep, and rock instrumentation with high-impact vocals and crisp sound engineering, Give Up The Ghost exemplifies Modestep’s distinctive style while drawing listeners in and guiding them through the soundscapes of a dystopian world he has created.
The first taste of Give Up The Ghost arrived with its lead single, “Limerence,” in early September. Featuring vocals by Cassyette, the track comes in with a classical and beautiful guitar strum before plunging you headfirst into the emotional chaos of love atop a booming breakbeat
“I’d wanted to work with Cassyette for years — she has that rare mix of raw power and vulnerability in her voice, and I knew she’d bring the intensity this track needed,” said Modestep. “We wrote it together in one explosive session, building from something haunting and intimate into this full-blown, high-energy DnB drop. It’s emotional chaos wrapped in euphoria — the sound of falling fast and not looking back.”
The beginning of the album provides an atmosphere akin to that, with instrumentation guiding the way. “Disconnected” leads the album with a mesmerizing piano surrounded by rain, taking you to the place it wants you to be before dropping you into a stadium full of build-up, effectively setting the tone for what’s to come.
“Bodybag” comes in next, drawing off that anticipation, before submerging you in tranquil lyrics. Electrifying synths and heavy bass lead to an earth-shaking drop that marks the beginning of the album’s foray into futuristic themes, as displayed in other tunes such as “Inside a Crowd,” “Different,” “Out of Control” with Dr. Ushūu, and “Feed.”
A standout arrives with “Hang My Heart,” which takes you on a journey of chaotic love. Much like that experience, it’s fast-moving and memorable, with easy-to-sing-along lyrics and quick-paced drums. The album closes with the title track, which features an emotion-fueled ride that will take you down memory lane, whether you want to go there or not. But it won’t hold you there. The sonic textures of the track shake off the past and awaken the body.
