Markus Schulz has embarked on a solo journey for In Search Of Sunrise 21 with the first of its three mixes, The Awakening, arriving to serenade your soul.
Few compilations hold as much weight in the electronic music scene as In Search Of Sunrise. From its origins and youthful years to the present day, the series has stood as a testament to the soul-stirring sounds and uplifting elements of trance and progressive house. Recent editions have seen Markus Schulz at the helm, joined by various other artists, but this year, he’s shaking it up and taking full control of all three mixes as the creative guide.
Previous years have seen a variety of rollout methods for the series, and for In Search Of Sunrise 21, Markus Schulz has planned to drop three mixes throughout the rest of the season. The first mix has recently arrived to usher in the beginning of the journey, so it’s time to dive into The Awakening.
The Awakening is about widening the lens; welcoming in legendary artists who somehow had never graced the series before: London Grammar, Sasha, Hernan Cattaneo, Deep Dish. And at the same time, it’s about planting seeds. I want someone five years from now to say, ‘I first discovered them on ISOS 21.’ That’s how you carry a legacy into the future. And the best way to do that is to reflect on authentic emotional resonance; something that touches the soul but doesn’t overexplain itself.
Markus Schulz
“It’s about giving space for new stories to unfold,” Schulz continued. “Because whether you’ve been with the series since the beginning, or this is your first time hearing its name – In Search of Sunrise isn’t just about where you’ve been. It’s about where you’re going next.”
One glance at the tracklist will prove what Markus Schulz stated. Tracks like Sasha and Super Flu’s “Astra,” Paul Oakenfold and Hernan Cattaneo’s “London to Buenos Aires,” Cosmic Gate’s “ID 1,” and Deep Dish, Eynka, and Wrabel’s “Midnight” showcase the sounds from legends in the scene. Not to mention Schulz’s Dakota project being front and center with “Before the Light Knew Us” and “Faultline.”
More prominent is the future-forward nature of The Awakening. Jerome Isma-Ae’s “Rise,” Estiva’s “E.T. Dust,” PROFF’s “Light Magic,” and Gai Barone’s “Classrooms” are all absolutely gorgeous additions. Other standouts include Korolova’s remix of “Feeling” and Kitty Amor’s take on “Into Gold,” as well as the closing tune from Mees Salomé, “Beyond Us.”
