Alix Perez Stuns on His Latest Album, 'Entanglements'

There’s no denying that 1985 Music label head Alix Perez is among the current era’s most influential producers within the bass realm. Known for his two heavily contrasting styles, there’s something for everyone to love from him and his imprint’s discography. From crafting some of the most sinister dubstep you’ve ever heard to the most beautiful drum and bass, there’s no limit to the style that is uniquely his own.

Earlier this year, Alix Perez released Gloom, which was filled with heavy bass and grime influence. Now, as summer draws to a close, he’s returned to his label with a fresh album that liquid drum and bass fans are rightfully drooling over, Entanglements.

Entanglements is a true sonic story from start to finish, so it’s only fitting that Perez is about to embark on a US tour this fall to coincide with the album release. With eight tracks in his beloved soulful style, only one track features a collaboration with none other than label veterans and fellow drum and bass group Visages. Alix Perez makes it difficult to declare any one standout track on Entanglements, as the best way to listen is in its entirety.

The opening tune and title track starts out slow and melancholy before falling into Alix Perez’s satisfying drums to set the scene for the rest of the project. Tasteful vocal elements and jazz-inspired flair complete tracks like “Elastic Soul” and “False Promises,” while the Visages collab, “Kauri” contains that signature 1985 Music sound with an unforgettably uplifting melody. There’s even a hefty jungle beat sprinkled into the mix on “R2R” that will undoubtedly cause commotion on the dance floor.

The closing track, “Continual Emotion,” concludes Entanglements without a single drum, featuring only deep, enchanting percussion. Perez flawlessly wraps up his tale with this heavy, profound feeling that perfectly aligns with its name and slowly eases the listener out of the project.
