Spoiler alert: There’s robot sex.
With more than two months to go before Justice release their upcoming album, HYPERDRAMA, the duo are finding creative ways to keep the conversation going. Last month, it was speculation of a collab with The Weeknd. This time around, it’s a not-safe-for-work music video for “Generator.”
Why not safe for work? The Léa Ceheivi-directed video depicts two robots engaging in sexual acts. They start out clothed, but after some heavy petting set to the menacing early bars of “Generator,” they gradually start to disrobe. Before long, they even tear each other’s skin off a la Terminator while doing the deed (or some semblance of it). It’s all done in CG — but at a few points, it almost seems real.
“I think we were excited about the idea of replicating a phenomenon from the 2000s, such as a sextape, but with a twist,” said Ceheivi in a statement. “The rough aesthetic of it, the lack of control. So yes, in our world, AI robots can also have sex, and orgasm – ‘la petite mort’.”
The more macabre aspects of the video fit well with Justice’s intention for the track itself. “To us, this one sounds like ‘Getaway’ by The Salsoul Orchestra, but with gabber and classic ’90s techno sounds,” the duo said in a joint statement. “We love all kinds of music that don’t really appear in Justice. But I would say that the main two types of music that coexist since the beginning are disco funk and more electronic music. And particularly on ‘Generator’, we make them coexist, but not really in a peaceful way. We like this idea of making them fight a bit for attention.”
Justice consists of Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Augé, who have released music together for 20 years and first achieved international fame thanks to their 2007 album, † (also known as Cross). HYPERDRAMA is slated to come out on April 26 and marks their first studio-length effort since 2016’s Woman. They have also shared a track called “One Night/All Night” featuring Tame Impala ahead of the full release.
