19-year-old Mirai Shepard was seen swimming in the lake outside SoFi Stadium during Illenium’s Trilogy: Los Angeles concert on Friday.
Tragedy overshadowed Illenium‘s Trilogy: Los Angeles concert at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on Friday, February 2. A 19-year-old man identified as Mirai Shepard drowned in the large lake outside the venue during the show, according to the Inglewood Police Department.
Police reports indicate that security staff saw Shepard walk into the lake shortly before 9:30pm local time. He was then seen swimming in it before going underwater altogether, which was when emergency crews were dispatched to conduct a search and rescue operation.
Just before 11pm, Shepard’s body was recovered and attempts were made to resuscitate him. They proved unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
“It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of an individual on Friday evening,” SoFi Stadium wrote in a statement to McClatchy News. “Our deepest condolences go out to the individual’s family and friends for their loss. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends affected by this devastating incident,” added the Inglewood Police Department in a press release.
This isn’t the first time somebody has drowned in the lake outside the stadium. In July 2022, a 45-year-old man scaled the fence around the property and was found dead in the manmade body of water. Deadline reports that it spans six acres, includes a 12-foot waterfall, and is 15 feet deep.
Illenium’s Trilogy concerts each consist of three DJ sets that collectively span nine years of his music career. In his hometown of Denver, the Trilogy show at Empower Field broke US records for tickets sold to a single-headliner event.
