DJ and producer Alma Marten has passed away after having been treated for brain cancer.
Leipzig, Germany-based DJ and producer Alma Marten has died at the age of 32. Her family shared the news in a Tuesday post from her Instagram account.
Alma Marten (real name Stefanie Merten) suffered from glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer for which life expectancy ranges only 14-16 months after diagnosis. In March she had shared details of a treatment plan that extended until September, writing that “no one knows what comes next.” In more heartfelt June update, she wrote, “There is no hope for me anymore, at least as much as I wanted. I bet another year or two, if at all; it could be three to five years… but then it’s over.”
“Today you fell asleep peacefully after a long, honorable battle,” Merten’s surviving family members wrote in their Tuesday post announcing her passing. “Your time in this world was too short, but you made it a better and more beautiful place for us.”
The post continues: “You were, are, and will remain such a wonderful daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, great love, friend, and musician. With your smile you infected the people around you, with your selfless and loving nature you gave hope and encouraged them. With your sensitivity and talent you have taken so many people on musical journeys. Everywhere you were there was so much love and lightness.”
Merten had released techno records as Alma Marten on Rohling, a sub label of Dapayk‘s Sonderling Records. She had performed alongside her brother under their Alma & August Lilienweiss project, and following a 2020 HÖR debut, she had begun landing gigs in Berlin clubs like Sisyphos, Mensch Meier, and Club OST.
“No words can describe how much we love, appreciate, and miss you,” finished her family’s post. “We will take you with us on every journey we take until we find each other again.”
